  1. Scryer41, To get rid of the white in the silhouette. While holding the Shift key down, Magic Wand the white. Press Delete on your keyboard. Next, go to Adjustments > Brightness / Contrast Set Brightness to -100 and Contrast to 100. Or use the silhouette as a mask for itself and apply Alpha Mask with the Invert Mask box checked.
  2. phcahill, These two are worth trying: Reboot the PC. Run PdnRepair.exe . Program Files/Paint.NET/PdnRepair.exe
  3. Djerun, It would be nice to have a keyboard shortcut to change which layer is the active working layer. To change visibility of the working layer: F4 + Tab + SpaceBar ( Pressing SpaceBar more than once will toggle visibility on and off.)
  4. rustman52, Threshold is part of Ed Harvey's plugin pack. Download the most current version here: If Threshold is showing in your Adjustments menu you may have an outdated plugin file. I believe that the tutorial author meant to say, use the Alpha Mask Import plugin. Alpha Mask Import: ============================================= This shows where the effects can be found after being installed: http://www.LupiUpload.de/images/2010/02/15/cce1918439bf0e18c715530a9f9aa50f0e0bb722.png
  5. If you have only the shadow layer visible, (checkmarked in Layers window) then you should see the gray-and-white checkerboard that indicates transparency.
  6. jdanniel, Just tried it, works fine. Be sure the layer is transparent aside from the text you'll be using for a shadow. Anything other than alpha will turn black along with the text.
  7. regnet, The closest workaround for saving a selection for re-use would be to make a new (transparent) layer, and fill the selection using the Paintbucket tool while holding the Shift key down. In the Layers window remove the checkmark to make the layer not visible. This layer can be used to recreate the selection at will by using the Magic Wand tool while holding the Shift key down. To save this layer as a file to be imported into other project files: Copy the layer to the Clipboard - Ctrl A Ctrl C Paste it into a new file - Ctrl+Alt V Save As.... PNG. To later bring it into a Paint.NET file- In the top menu: Layers > Import From File...
  8. kayliedanielle, You can experiment a bit in prepping the mask. The Alpha Mask effect is responsive to variations in gray-scale, so try partial coverage with blurring and brightness adjustments. Top menu: Adjustments > Brightness / Contrast You can control where and to what degree the texture is apparent through a bit of trial and error with ongoing adjustments to the mask. Get the outlying areas of limbs and clothing looking right, then do the face area in full black as a final step. (I got tired of looking at lizard skin) --- http://www.LupiUpload.de/images/2010/02 ... 4d2e18.png
  9. kayliedanielle, Alpha Mask is in Effects. In the top menu: Effects > Alpha Mask. ========================================== There is more than on way to prepare a mask, this is one. Make a new transparent layer above your background image. Use the Paintbucket tool with a right-click, to fill the new layer with white. In the Layers window click the bottom right icon, and set the Blend mode to Multiply. Press Enter. The white will have turned clear. Working on the now-clear layer, use the PaintBrush tool to cover the people's faces with black. If you make a mistake and paint some black outside the area you want, just switch to the right mouse button and use it as if it was an eraser. Once everything to be left untextured is covered by black, position a texture layer below the mask layer. Duplicate the texture layer and apply Gaussian blur to the top texture layer until all detail is gone. (The blurred color will remain.) In the top menu: Effects > Blurs > Gaussian Blur In the Layers window click the mask layer. Now hold down the Ctrl key and press A, C, D This will copy the mask to the clipboard. In the Layers window click the blurred layer. Apply the Alpha Mask effect with the Invert Alpha box checked. Merge what remains of the blurred texture layer down onto the unblurred texture layer below it. Apply the edited texture layer to your background layer. The Paint.NET Help file is available to help you figure out various aspects of the basic program. http://www.getpaint.net/doc/latest/en/E ... sMenu.html It can be accessed from Paint.NET by pressing the F1 key. =============================================== This example was made, with Alpha Mask, using roughly the above described method. http://www.LupiUpload.de/images/2010/02 ... b42181.png If you don't like the result (aside from the lizard skin texture used) then please explain what needs to be different. If you feel that you must use Smudge, then in Smudge use a very large soft brush, slide the Tolerance up to 90-100%. Go mouse-down and jiggle the brush in place, mouse-button-up, change position and repeat. All that you will be doing is blurring things somewhat inefficiently.
  10. guruprateek89, Try these plugins: http://mkt.t-cat.biz/pdn/3.htm#3
  11. Save your cut-out head as a PNG file. Then always open the different bodies as background and import the head file as a layer. In the top menu, Layers > Import From File... ================================ Also: After you cut-out and save the head image, go to the save folder, right-click the file, then: Properties > Read Only > OK. .
  12. kayliedanielle, My answer would fit better if this had been left in GD&Q. (Edit: I forgot to add the smiley.) I suggest using the outline technique shown in this tutorial, in combination with a blur. Instead of cutting out your central image, use the outline to define the area to be selected by Magic Wand and then blur that part of the texture before applying it to your background image. Remember to draw your outline on a transparent layer above your background. Example: http://www.LupiUpload.de/images/2010/02/13/656eda80b06c0c7f4ed2fea08a63cdf3e3b42181.png
  13. gigahunter, Press F4. Adjust slider. http://www.getpaint.net/doc/latest/en/LayersMenu.html
  14. gist901, To avoid the bleeding save as a PNG filetype. There is a loss of quality in the JPG filetype.
  15. martinlo64, To avoid the distinct border between the blurred area and the background: Make a selection of the area to be blurred. Then copy/paste into a new (transparent) layer. Deselect. Ctrl + C Ctrl + Shift + V Ctrl + D Blur. The edges of the pasted piece will blur into alpha. This will give a soft edge. After blurring, merge the blurred layer down into the background.
  16. Layers Window The online Help file can be accessed from Paint.NET by pressing the F1 key. The icon at the bottom left of the Layers window will add a new layer.
  17. allanc, A good way is to type the Arial on its own transparent layer, then add a new (transparent) layer, switch fonts, click to restart the text tool, type Wingdings, and so on. Adding a new layer will finalize the text and let you change fonts without affecting what is already typed. Having each section of type on its own layer will let you reposition things later, should you need to.
  18. loris, Try this: Download again, to the Desktop. Left-click the zip to open it. If DLL files are there, copy/paste them to the Paint.NET/Effects folder.
  19. mediachic, Press F8. http://www.getpaint.net/doc/latest/en/WindowMenu.html
  20. Try running chkdsk, with the /f parameter, from the command line. chkdsk with /f parameter Then reboot the PC and install Paint.NET.
  21. KetchupKid, Yes, there is a way. These are the links that I know of that deal with changing icons and cursors. =================================================
