  1. I read Tomokatu's question as referring to irregular selections? I don't think EER's method above will cope with those too well? (but could be wrong!) (angle of edge to direction of expansion, critical?) Another way: It's tricky to expand or contract a selection and plugins are not allowed to change the selection. However if the selected area is copied and pasted into a new transparent layer it then becomes an 'object'. To expand that object (when that whole layer is selected) there are two plugins both called 'Outline Object' one by BoltBait (above your post) and one by 'Pyrochild'. To diminish the object the 'AAAssistant' plugin is useful. Plugins can be found via the plugin index, generously maintained by EER (post above mine). There is a link to it in his signature. I hope that's what you meant Tomokatu! Sorry it is not a perfect soloution - there are more complicated variants! (blurring the created object and changing the opacity) If you meant rectangular selections, stick with EER's method above.
  2. Hi checho, I'm think the .dll goes into C:\Program Files\paint.net\FileTypes which should exist already. I haven't used this particular file type but that's where file type plugin .dlls usually go.
  3. This is really cool! - besides photos also a useful way to shade objects, as it doesn't affect the transparent bits. Great work - many thanks! Thanks Pratyush too!
  4. Glad you are having with it Doughty - it's one of my favourites to play around with!
  5. What's their email address? I've only ever written my own method for doing this. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing!". Clipwarp and Squirklewarp both use it to avoid the hard edges if simply repeating or clamping. I was working on a tiling plugin with some other interesting tesselation patterns (examples recently in my gallery) but (as usual) I started over complicating things. I'll be happy to share the code when/if it gets finished but at the moment it needs a lot of annotation before being understandable.
  6. It's all about experimentation Doughty! Judging by the colours, I think you may have pressed 'OK' when it was on 'step 1' then run it again using 'step 2'?. That's fine (I like the result) but 'step 1' is really intended just to show which 'edge' pixels have been selected. Adjust the top two sliders so that mainly edges show up in red.(more red = slower) Then change to 'step 2' (without pressing OK) and adjust the other controls, then, when happy press OK. Thanks for posting the image - sometimes it's good to use plugins in unorthodox ways!
  7. Useful and interesting tutorial and comments. Many thanks! I normally use another surface to get around R.O.I 'striping' using the example provided by Null54 in the 'Furblur' thread (second post): http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/27013-furblur-roi-random-problems/ (Which is a set up in a different way). I hope to work through the tutorial more fully later.
  8. ^^Dipping it in the sea worked! (oh well, no one else found that funny ) Glad to report the successful delivery of a bouncing baby Windows 10! After all the failed installs it eventually got going ok - took about 3 hours altogether (~5Mbps internet). I was initially worried that Office 7, Kaspersky TS, notepad++ and Krita said 'Not available' - but all working now. paint.net 4.0.6 updated from my previous version very easily. All seems to be working well - performance seems even quicker!. Some very minor* issues with window titles and padding but generally very satisfied! (*They could be my fault too - will investigate - HD display ). Windows updates are now automatic but there are still choices about what data is shared, default programs etc. So far, so good.
  9. Thanks Zagna - I will continue trying. (MS say the update is rolled out in waves ... so I will dip my laptop in the sea tomorrow )
  10. My Pdn 3.5.11 looks like this: The Effects folder contains mostly .dll files - there could also be .txt, .pdf or (rarely) .exe files in there. This depends on what plugins you have installed. Now '.pdb' and '.cs' files are sometimes used when creating or testing new plugins. You may have downloaded the 'source files' for a plugin instead of the compiled .dll file. They shouldn't be causing any problems but you can remove them. The 'FileTypes' again contains mostly .dll files or .dlc files. 'Native.x64' and 'Native.x86' contain the program .dlls - for 64 or 32 bit systems respectively. 'Resources' contains folders for different languages and icons. 'Staging' contains the windows installer (.msi) You may find it easier to move all the effect .dlls from the Effects folder into a folder you have created (not in Programs). You can then add them back and test them a few a time. If possible download the latest version of an effect that is compatible with Pdn 3.5.11. Pdn will open quicker with fewer effects and you can track down anything that is causing problems. It is tempting to download every effect published but it is better to download just a few and really learn what they can do - then decide if you really need them and try out some others! In Pdn 3.5.11 the view size slider is at the top - in Pdn4 it is on the lower right. In Pdn 3.5.11 right click on a selected area to rotate it - in Pdn4 there is a control nub. Pdn4 has advantages and is 'supported' by the forum. If a plugin you need doesn't run on Pdn4 then you should report it on the plugin's thread ... and hopefully the author will update it.
  11. Pleased to hear that! - (the 'old' Pdn 3.5.11 isn't directly available from the forum but there is a link to it in the 'forum rules' section 8. Which should be safe. Do consider trying Pdn 4+ if you can though.) Will wait to see the screenshot
  12. No notification to update - it just auto-updates and fails with an 80240020 or an 80246010 error? I've tried the recommended eg."wuauclt.exe/updatenow" trick http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-win_upgrade/windows-10-failed-to-install-error-code-80240020/9d69a99b-1851-4464-b10b-e69946993e78?auth=1 Very frustrating, completely dissillusioned with Microsoft.
  13. Hello Adorabelle, 1. Are the plugin ".dll's" showing up in Program Files/ Paint.NET/Effects ? - (and not in sub-folders). 2. Are effect .dlls the ONLY things in that folder (perhaps another of Pdn's files has accidentally been moved in there?) 3. If you can supply a screenshot of your Paint.NET/Effects folder it may help to find an answer. 4. Any other details you can confirm will help too. ie. Is it Pdn 3.5.11 or Pdn 4.0.5? where did you download Pdn and the effects from? Are there any crash reports?
  14. Well written! Should it be under 'tutorials' though? - I'm sure many newer users ( and old fools like me ) would find it useful there? Well done and thanks Eli.
  15. These are great! Always good to play around with shape and colour - inspiring.
  16. Another way is to copy all of the source canvas to the destination in one go, then use the 'G.D.I.+' library to 'draw' the lines. Example codelab code link below. (Do thoroughly read BoltBait's tutorials first) http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/31885-request-tablegrid/
  17. Good image Skulllbonz - those two gradients are useful for making ammonite fossils! Thanks for saying thanks ftlog666
