Yuri-S
Hi, I recently (sept 2022) started using Paint.net to augment my image editing; in addition to the programs I now use. Primary has been Olympus Workspace (now 2.1) , Luminar 4 and since the New Year 2023, Topaz DeNoise AI. I allowed the recent update to 5.02 to install on Feb 25, 2023. On doing so, Paint.net immediately started giving me 'OPEN' errors when attempting to open/load both Luminar 4 and DeNoiseAI jpg images. I had NO problems of ANY kind with moving and using images from ANY sources to Paintnet, prior to the 5.0.2 update. I do have BoltBait and TR additions installed - all were operational without any issues.A also have the full text 'error detail report' - however there doesn;t seem to be an ability to 'attach' a file - I understand that... but if you want, pls provide a way to upload or email. I'm not certain which 'version' I had prior to the 'update'- AND a recent windows update seems to have 'reset' my system recovery, so no system rollback to whatever version I had before. I tried a 'clean' install of latest 5.0.2, SAME Problem. Took some time to find an older version which doesn't use an installer which goes to the 5.0.2 version. I finally found a download for the ZIP version of 4.3 from 2022. Now Installed. NO PROBLEMS in opening JPG files from any other sources. Pls lemme know where I can send the error report (contains detail on my computer's operational environment). Thx Yuri
BoltBait
Please zip up one of the images that refuses to open and attach the zip file here. Just be sure the image is family-friendly. Just be sure the image is family-friendly. The images I have which will not open are all larger (by at least 2mb) than accepted MAX file size for attachments here (256 kB). Reducing the file size is possible, but I can't assure the reduced file will also be 'rejected' - I have removed/uninstalled 5.0.2 and currently have 4.3 installed. Don't think I'm willing to go thru the whole update to 5.0.2 process again. It's been some hours of time spent trying a number of images, deciding it was the update and then uninstalling 5.0.2, making sure the system was well cleaned out and reinstalling 4.3... If there's a way to email or some other method to get you an image which WAS rejected (approx 3+ mb), lemme know. Thx Yuri

To save space, click on the 'spoiler' icon in the top of the tool bar (eye with black pupil) and paste it in the bar that opens up. To fix a bug like this it's critical that I have access to a file that causes the bug. You can use the portable version of 5.0.2 which will let you run the app without having to install it, and it won't overwrite your current installation either: https://github.com/paintdotnet/release/releases/latest/ Quote The Paint.NET Blog: https://blog.getpaint.net/ Donations are always appreciated! https://www.getpaint.net/donate.html

But as I'm shrinking down the files which give the 'Open' error, at a point getting to closer to 256Kb, they start opening... None of the files which are proving a problem in Paintnet are an issue with any other program I have used, which commonly accept jpgs. This files which remain close to my working size (4 to 8 Mb @ 300 to 350 DPI) is when I get the 'Open error'. I seem to get a few down to around 2Mb, and get the error... I'm 'done' with trying to get the images down to under 256kB... If you'd like an image which won;t Open, then it'll have to be bigger , 2 to 3Mb... Let me know. I've attached the Open File Error Detail report I've gotten from one of these images - if that might help shed some light. I suspect there might be some problematic metadata attached to these files. Will these images open in MS Paint? If so, try saving a copy and see in PDN will open the copy. Rick Brewster
Yeah this looks like an issue with the new IPTC metadata handling. Most likely an error from WIC that we can just suppress. cc @null54 You can try to e-mail me the image file, the e-mail address is listed at https://getpaint.net/contact.html Once I've got an image that causes this error, I should be able to fix it really quick and then the 5.0.3 update will work smoothly for you. Solution Rick Brewster Posted February 28 Solution Share Posted February 28 Okay I got the image and I figured out the fix. It was as I suspected, one of the IPTC metadata items isn't loading correctly. Suppressed the error and now it works. 1 1 Quote The Paint.NET Blog: https://blog.getpaint.net/ Donations are always appreciated! https://www.getpaint.net/donate.html

Something that might get fixed in WIC? Or is it an error in the IPTC data itself? Edited February 28 by Tactilis

Only the first item is written correctly, the remaining items omit the data length from the IPTC record header. I'll send Topaz a note with reference to the problem their jpg file is causing. ... but why would this cause a problem in 5.0.2 and not in 4.3.12 or in other programs which do open the image file? ... rhetorical ... I have some very basic programming knowledge, but really only concerned with images 'working' and knowing that jpg is hardly a tight std... The error is in the IPTC metadata. 5.0.2 processes this, while 4.3.12 and most other programs do not. Rick Brewster
You can try out the 5.0.3 beta, which has a fix for this: Quote The Paint.NET Blog: https://blog.getpaint.net/ Donations are always appreciated! https://www.getpaint.net/donate.html
