Forum Code - (How to link back to something).

Recommended Posts

We can no longer use url code to post images on this forum.

1.  If you save your image to postimages.org then you can use the Direct Link.  But make sure your image is not bigger than 600 x  800.

2. If you want to post a clickable thumb, save your image on Imgur, copy the last 7 digits of the code, go to the black square with the green dot, in the tool bar of

this editor, and add the code to the box which opens up.

Hi @ardneh  I assume you are referring to say, Gradient Mapping link.  Go to the Gradient Mapping page and copy the URL. Whatever thread you are posting to, type Gradient Mapping, highlight it with mouse cursor and select the 'Link' button (looks like a chain link), paste the URL in the space provided and click okay. That makes Gradient Mapping 'clickable' and will take the user to that page.

For the user names, type the '@' symbol and a drop-down menu will appear. Choose the name from the list.

Okay, clickable thumb works, but doesn't work in preview.

Also, no option to add clickable thumb in an edit.

So, how to edit in these as is done in the Pictorium?

Also, clickable thumbs using postimage or imgbox, etc?

Automatic thumbnails? Not postimage - their URL structure requires two pieces of information.

Imgbox might be possible. They appear to use an eight-character code....Uh, nope. Sorry. They use a changing folder structure in the URL

		<a href="/BKvaF07L"><img alt="Bkvaf07l b" src="https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/b6/d3/BKvaF07L_b.png" /></a>
		<a href="/Ec7HX8q5"><img alt="Ec7hx8q5 b" src="https://thumbs2.imgbox.com/dc/fe/Ec7HX8q5_b.png" /></a>

The workround is to find the thumbnail & paste it's url into the forum post (right click image > view image info). Add a link to the image using the full image URL.

I know this is an old thread, but am I understanding correctly believing that there is no markup method to make a text string also a link? For example, how in BBCode it would be [URL=example.com]some words[/URL] or in Markdown it would be [some words](example.com) or hell just with good old HTML it would be <a href="example.com">some words</a>.

Is clicking the GUI's link option in the toolbar the only way to do this?

Sorry, I know; I feel silly asking this. I would just be really shocked if any forum—old or new—doesn't support some form of markup language. So I figure I'm probably just misunderstanding something. :)

Cheers, by the way. First comment! ;)

Yes. This forum software (Invision) only supports a WYSIWYG editor. No code editor.

(September 25th, 2023)  Sorry about any broken images in my posts. I am aware of the issue.

That is.............extraordinarily surprising. ಠ_ಠ

Was that just because this was the software that was chosen and it had that limitation, or was that limitation actually a sought-after criterion for you all...?

I'm not sure why this doesn't work for you? Select the text and hit the link icon. Paste in the URL and you're done.

Yes, it's 3 years since the post prior to yours. Please don't revive old threads. Read the Forum Rules.

Yes, but it takes just a moment to click the link icon   image.png

And the text string can either be a piece of existing text you typed in your Reply that you have selected or  you can type it in the Link text box.

This is quicker and is easier for most people than typing BBCode, Markdown, or HTML. And they can't mess up the syntax.

Why?  Are you planning on making hundreds of posts with links in?  Are you spammer, wanting to automate the creation of posts?

From this side of the fence, it's not a limitation at all. It reduces the spamming rate a little and is easy for forum members to use.

I'm sorry. I did read the forum rules before posting, but I must have missed that one.

I guess. I remember using forums back in the day and BBCode was always way easier. Markdown is definitely easier, attested to by all the people on Reddit, Lemmy, etc. But, you know, whatever. It's your guys' site. I was just asking, friend.

What? No, Jesus, no need to be so accusatory. I was just asking because all the forums I've ever used in my decades of using the Internet have had some form of markup language support, and it greatly surprised me that a forum even existed that didn't. As far as I knew, it was basically a standard for forums to at least have BBCode support.

BBCode (Bulletin Board code) was created in the 1990s, long before any online WYSIWYG editors existed. Since then browsers & the web have evolved and WYSIWYG editors have become ever more capable. Everything BBCode did can be done more straightforwardly and comprehensibly with a good WYSIWYG editor.

BBCode is slowly dying. It exists now primarily in platforms based on legacy software.

Be that as it may, it's still been a standard with any forum I've ever used back in the day (the "day" being like 2010–2015, not necessarily the 90s). Those had BBCode, HTML support, and a GUI editor. It's wasn't really unusual for forums in my experience to be just the GUI. Maybe it was just the ones I frequented; that is certainly a possibility.

Perhaps, but it's still far faster to use a good markup language, at least if you're using a WYSIWYG editor without a decent range of keyboard shortcuts. (For example, this editor supports ctrl+B/I/U but at far as I can see it doesn't have any keybinds for many of the ancillary functions, such as quotes, hyperlink embedding, and so forth.) I mean that's just statistically clear judging from how often it was used in forums as I said as well as the popularity of Markdown nowadays.

I couldn't agree more. Please don't misunderstand: I'm by no means saying BBCode is the best option. I'm just saying I expected this place, being a forum, to have at a markup language supported. Again, maybe it was the forums I frequented, but I've never seen a forum with just a GUI option, at least in the late 00s / early 10s.

Again, if this works fine for you guys, I'm happy for you and I'm not judging you all personally. I was merely expressing my position of shock, judging from my experience. For all I know, dual-WYSIWYG/markup input may have been mainly a product of the late 00s / early 10s.

You didn't offend anyone.

But you did resurrect a thread that was years old and where the OP's question had already been answered.

Please don't do that. Start a new thread if something new needs to be said.
