Free form shape tool

Recommended Posts

Hello. Sorry, but the Free From tool is no longer available in Paint.NET 4.0, See this thread on why : http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/25598-does-anyone-use-the-freeform-shape-tool/

For alternatives, you can try using the lasso tool, then use the Outline Selection plugin from BoltBait's Plugin Pack : http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/28488-boltbaits-plugin-pack-for-v40-updated-june-20-2014/

Suggestion, you might have rough edges from this method, so try using a thicker line and then run an edge smoothing plugin such as Feather (from boltbait) and AA's Assistant, which is found here : http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/16643-dpys-plugin-pack-2014-05-04/

Another way to trace images is often done by using the line/curve tools. For an example, here is a YouTube video of the line/curve tool being used. The video is old, but it's a good demonstration. http://www.youtube.com/watch?fmt=18&v=bHvHpT65HmA&hl=ja&gl=JP

If you install this file type plugin, http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/25792-photoshop-brush-filetype-2013-09-01/,

Then using brushes might interest you :

Note : File Type plugins do not go in the effects folder, they go in the FileTypes Folder.

The problem with the alternatives given is they are even slower then the brush or are rather inefficient space wise or both. The callouts would be usefuller if the arrows could be rotated and stretched without rotating the whole shape. Oh well, small thing I guess. Its only a few second difference between the brush and the freeform shape. Though all  of these few second differences do seem to pile up.

Many apologies for waiting so long to start supporting you. I upgraded to 4.0 and then donated... mainly because I've become accustomed to using your program. But, back to topic.

First, 4.0 seems not ready for production... it has many things that happen on screen that a programmer might leave in to provide feedback when coding the product (blanking out screens, status feedback messages about what the code is doing, etc.). Was the product really ready for production? (No need to answer... perhaps the next update will take care of these things).

As for the freeform tool. It is a mainstay for me. I've learned to depend on it for so much of my editing that not having it is becoming a "deal breaker" for me unless I can manufacture a workaround. Let's say I took a picture of a sign, like a placard or something. The picture might not have even sides. I use the freeform tool to, say, quickly "green out" all four sides and save it. In the future, I can call up the picture of the sign, select the background, invert the selection, and I get my sign to cut and paste into another picture.

In carving out a shape within a picture, like someone's head, I may use the line tool to draw a green line around the shape. But then I want to green out the rest of the picture. I use the free form tool with the green and go around the head. After saving, I can use the head in the future as in the last paragraph.

I'm trying to make 4.0 work for me, but it's a real shocker to lose this tool. I'll keep reading some forum topics to see if someone has worked around this.

Thanks.

I think you'll have to be more specific (I recommend opening a thread in the troubleshooting forum about this topic).  I am not encountering any such problems (nor have I seen any more than usual on the forums for a new release).  To me, Paint.NET 4 seems to be fairly polished and done.  Some bugs, but that's to be expected of course.

The Doctor: There was a goblin, or a trickster, or a warrior... A nameless, terrible thing, soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies. The most feared being in all the cosmos. And nothing could stop it, or hold it, or reason with it. One day it would just drop out of the sky and tear down your world.
Amy: But how did it end up in there?
The Doctor: You know fairy tales. A good wizard tricked it.
River Song: I hate good wizards in fairy tales; they always turn out to be him.

You may like to have a look at this plugin here, as you seem to do a lot of cutting outs :)

Thanks for the link to some plugin creators. Since I'm new to this forum, what a great resourse to maybe help with my 4.0 struggle. I'll experiment with some of the plugins and share results accordingly. Thanks again.

  • 2 weeks later...

Are you going crazy guys?

Alternative ways doen't give us the same freedom and working with them consumps more time
That is the reason why i unistalled paint.net 4.1 because there is no Freeform Shape tool!

I can't beleive that someone suggested to leave it out.

My favourite and one of the most useful tool .

Please Rick add it again!

Crazy? No. Do not call people crazy, that's incredibly rude. mesa, this is your only warning.

If you're back on paint.net 3.5 then you'll have to stay off the forum. Unless you want to help with constructive feedback for 4.0, as opposed to just blurting out "are you going crazy guys?" and/or throwing a temper tantrum.

This thread's been rather negative so I'm closing it.
