  1. But 'Scintillate' does this in one operation either diagonally or as a lattice. Unless I have completely misunderstood the question - which is quite possible!😉

Why use scissors when you can strap two pieces of flint together with deer sinew?... no bad feeling intended, I'm just perplexed as to the advantages of your method?
Oh well...I'm sure there is a reason.

    No rudeness intended.

If you want to invert every other pixels, this should work, I think.

    Add a layer.

Use BoltBait's Grid/Checkerboard plugin to create a 1-pixel-width checkerboard pattern.

Set the Blending Mode to Difference.

    Merge the layers.

If you really need to select every other pixel:

Create the checkerboard in a new layer.

    Select the Magic Wand tool.

Set the Flood Mode to Global.

    Select a pixel.

Switch to the layer you want to use it on.

    But why?

  3. I was trying to alert the mods that the linked page needs updating (I assume).

Next, download THIS (.NET Framework v4.8) and install it.  Sometimes the paint.net installer can not install it for you.  By doing it ahead of time, you can avoid some install issues.  You can Repair an existing .NET Framework installation with this tool: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2698555/microsoft-net-framework-repair-tool-is-available

Getting plugins to work with pdn 4.3.4 and net 6 is another matter altogether ... one I haven't solved yet!... I'll start a different thread for that eventually.😉

  4. Unfortunately (in this case) both the built-in rotate and zoom and my Aardvark plugin both use sampling/anti-aliasing to resize things bigger. This means the pixel texture gets blurred.

I recommend you fill a small canvas with the desired fill pattern then use Image/resize and use the nearest neighbour option and an integer multiple (200%,500% etc)
This can then be saved and used to fill selections using MJW's 'paste from clipboard' plugin.
Best to save a folder of resized fill textures while you're at it - they are tile-able so you only need a small square .png file for each.

Hope that helps as a work around - an option to directly resize the fill patterns without blurring (nearest neighbour) would be a useful addition if @Rick Brewster   sees fit.

P.S. - don't forget to change sampling back to 'best quality' when you're finished! 😉

  5. I am trying to make some changes to a plug-in written in an older version VS that targetted an older version of Pdn and I'm having troubles setting up the following:

    1. Adding Pdn references (PaintDotNet.Base, Core, Data, Effects, .exe).
In VS2019 I could add the Pdn references in Solution Explorer/Project/References. How do I do this in VS2022?
Do I edit the '.csproj' file directly?... I've just done that ... it now shows errors - mainly conflicts in targetted .net frame work

    2. Target Framework. This was previously accessed via Project/Properties/Application in VS2019. I believe I will have to change this from 4.1.2.0 to 6.0.0.0 to build in Pdn 4.3.4? - Again I can't even find the damn setting!
Note. Right click/ properties on the project shows the properties window but no info ... or Application tab?... just blank and not like the MS page below.
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/visualstudio/ide/visual-studio-multi-targeting-overview?view=vs-2022

    3. Build Events. In VS2019 these could be accessed via Project/Properties/Build Events. Where do I now find these settings in VS 2022? - I've just edited the paths in .csproj but can't build due to the framework issues.

    4. How do I change the black backgound? Not keen on the dark theme. Used to be under View/Settings I think.Solved.
    Aah - Debug/Options/Theme - that's a strange place to hide it!

Any advice would be appreciated. I no longer have Pdn 4.2.16 installed so currently have no way to alter effects built using older versions.

I'm sure I'm making this far more complicated than it needs to be.
Does anyone have a successful method (baby steps) of updating their older effects to use VS 2022 and Pdn 4.3.4? - a share would be greatly appreciated and might keep my blood pressure down!

    Many thanks

  6. Hello and welcome from me too @stefanob

I too had some very strange 'hangs' after updating to 4.3.4 - I had to keep using the task manager to kill pdn.😒
However when you actually leave it to run without trying to do anything it eventually sorts itself out. The next time you open the program it loads quickly and doesn't hang.
I believe it is doing loads of background stuff when first loaded after installation and appears usable when it isn't really ready... Also check settings for any plugin load errors, many effects need updating for this version. A reboot may help too.
    Hope that helps.

  7. @Vagabondi, @Pixey, @midora, @lynxster4

Many thanks for the positive comments, very much appreciated!

@Vagabondi - Actually I produced the ripples in the water by making a layer with circles using Pyro's Random shape fill
... then repeatedly used Overblur to produce concentric circles
... then tilted the layer and used this as a base to distort the reflections using clipwarp*.

    * I do have a better version of clipwarp but I need to fix a problem before releasing it.

  8. A long, long, long, time ago, before computers, before central heating, before planning authorities, there was a competition, a celebration, a feast, to drive away the bleak winter days.
One tribe, two teams, would drag the biggest stones they could find over the muddy, possibly icy ground and float them on barges up the rivers to the site of their annual feast ... because they could. Young males could impress females in the gathered clans with their determination, fortitude, teamwork and problem solving skills.
No-one really knew what to do with these megaliths, so the druids were called in to decide. "Let's create an enigma" ... and they all laughed at the half-witted intellectuals to come in future millennia. This is what the meeting looked like as far as I remember 😉

The installer reads installation path from registry but it can't find it. You should only specify installation path during PDN installation and not change it afterwards. It'll break all plugin installers that tries to detect version/location and it can also mess up your PDN file associations.

    So I've discovered. 🙄

Thanks for the other advice. I've never used ILspy - I should, when I get the time.

I have just installed the latest paint.net (4.3.3) in 'tandem' with v4.2.16 and v3.5.11 (perhaps that's a tricycle 😄). I decided to name the program folders 'pdn4.3.3', 'pdn4.2.16' and 'pdn3.5.11'.
Unfortunately this prevents the codelab v6.4 installer from detecting the installation.... I've just tried renaming the pdn4.3.3 folder back to 'paint.net' - the installer still tells me I have version 0.0 and asks if I want to proceed anyway. I aborted the installer.

Is it possible to get the codelab v6.4 .dll without an installer?... or does the 'install anyway' choice allow me to specify a path?

    Many thanks

Bump... Is there any way to safely extract the .dll from the installer or could someone share it, please?

Would changing the program folder name have messed up a setting in the registry?

@AndrewDavid Needing to install VS2022 and work out how to compile from Github seems like overkill! - but thanks anyway.
