Ability to lock layer?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to see if I can lock a layer. Searching the forum or documentation gives me nothing.

I want the layer to show still but to not be impacted by tools such as "rectangle select" or "move selected pixels" and just the content pasted over to be impacted.

Similar to how you can move items in regular MS Paint without it effecting the background but since .net uses layers vs stationary background it is an issue for me.

If no way is possible I will look further into installing W11 Paint on my W10 machine as W11 Paint offers the features I want that W10 doesn't.

Just 'uncheck' the layer in the layers window.

That hides the layer which OP specifically doesn't want

@gmenasco have you tried adding layers? There isn't really a reason to lock a layer when you can just create a new layer and do things there.

The OP seems to think that locking a layer would prevent all tools and effects from interacting with the layer, and I may be wrong but I don't think any image editor works that way.

Locking layers would be useful for preventing accidental modification to the layer's contents, but it is a somewhat advanced feature. As an example, Adobe Photoshop has the following layer locking modes that can be combined to partially or fully disable editing of the layer contents:

  1. Lock Color Channels - prevents the layer color channels from being modified.
  2. Lock Transparency - prevents the layer transparency from being modified.
  3. Lock Position - prevents the layer pixels from being moved.

Right; from OP's description it seems like what they need is another layer, not the ability to lock anything about the layers. In which case Layers -> Add New Layer is the ticket (there's also a + button over in the Layers window itself)

This link to the Working with Layers page of the documentation might help https://www.getpaint.net/doc/latest/WorkingWithLayers.html
