  2. Since everyone seems to have provided their input to my "misdeed", I'll provide you with mine: Admittedly, I undertook this under a false premise. Namely, I wasn't paying attention to all the replies in the thread and I assumed Mr Welsh wasn't going to re-do/fix the original tutorial. I reiterate, it was a false assumption. It wasn't until after he commented here and after my first PM to apologize to him that I went back to the original post and only then did I realize he did in fact indicate the possibility of making the tutorial more user friendly. I then PM'd him again noting this and again apologized. There was absolutely no malice intended. I was only trying to help the community (paying it forward as it were) to alleviate issues that some folks were having. Yes, it is true. I should've addressed it with him beforehand. And because I didn't, I am deeply sorry for (I'll keep this clean) "irritating" him the way I did and for inadvertently stepping on his toes. So once more I would like to say publicly that I am truly sorry. I wish you all good luck.
  3. I don't know which part of the picture you want transparent. That aside, the issue that comes into play is what color or texture does the game/modeling software require? You can do anything you want all day long with this via paint.net, but unless you incorporate that which your game requires (and quite possibly a file format it will recognize), you may just end up treading water until you're blue in the face. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful on this. Hopefully the above will set you in the right direction. I believe the link I provided you mentions something about importing a psd file and somehow converting it to DDS, maybe that's all you need. I believe (I don't use it as I don't have that other program) there's a plugin so you can save to that format. Check out the link here: http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?showtopic=18128
  4. Excuse me while I add my 2 cents if I may. If you're having trouble getting a specific size, simply edit the outer perimeter (square portion) down to the perimeter of the circle using the selection tool (use selection tool, frame the circle, and crop to selection - if you don't get it down exactly the first time, repeat the process), and once done, simply resize the image down to the pixel size you desire. Edit: Using this method, it doesn't matter what the original size of your circle is.
  5. NN, you know how often I mess up on my work, you've seen my "Gallery", so don't take this stuff too deeply to heart. That having been said, I won't point what others already have. I love this piece. It's has a very tranquil feel to it - besides, blue is one of my favoritey (yes, I said "favoritey") colors! Kudos to you!
  6. I hope Mr. WelshBlue forgives me (and doesnt take offense) for this as I'd like to clarify steps from the original tutorial to make this easier for everybody and hopefully alleviate some confusion. Please download and install the following Plug-ins (if you haven't already acquired them) by clicking on the link: Align Object Feather AA-assistant OK, let's begin: 1) Create a new layer 2) Select the color which you wish to work with (we're using blue - if it wasn't obvious) 3) Select the "Elipse" Tool 4) Set it to "Draw Filled Shape" Next, go to the canvas, and somewhere near the top, click and simultaneously press the "Shift" key and while still holding the mouse key in, drag it down until you are satisfied with the diameter of the circle. Next, from the "Effects" menu, select "Align Object" With the dialogue box displayed, 1) Click on the center button (see diagram below) 2) Next, click "OK" Select the magic wand and then click somewhere on our (blue) circle With our circle still selected 1) Click on "Add New Layer" 1a) You should see the addition of your next layer 1) Next, flip the colors your working on by clicking on the double arrows as indicated below 2) Next Select the "Gradient" tool 3) Use the "Radial Gradient" 4a-4b) Go to the canvas and click and drag as indicated below 1) Over on the "Layers" panel, double-click on our working layer to bring up the layer's "Layer Property" dialogue box (illustrated below as step 2 - next) 2) From the pulldown menu under "Mode", select "Multiply" and then click the "OK" button. 1a) Merge the layer down by clicking on the button indicated below 1b) Your result 1) Next, from the "Effects" > "Object" menu, select "Feather" (dialogue box image has been pasted into the illustration below - use default setting) and click "OK". 2) From the "Effects" > "Object" menu, select "AA's Assistant" (my personal preference is to set the sliders all the way up - again, the dialogue box image has been pasted into the illustration below) and click "OK" 1) Next, create another new layer as we did previously (as shown below 1a-1b) 2) Again, select the "Elipse" tool (no need to adjust the top - paint.net uses last setting) 3a - 3b) Go to the canvas and draw 2 circles (either round or eliptical) Next go to the menus under "Effects" > "Blur" and select "Gausian Blur" On the slider use a "Radius" value that suits you Next go to the menus under "Effects" > "Distort" and select "Polar Inversion" 1a - 1b) From the resulting dialogue box, open the menu under "Edge behavior" and select "Clamp" 2) Set the "Amount" to your taste (Note: slide to the left to get a negative value - needed - and adjust until you're satisfied with the size of the center hole) Note: Recommended to do "Layer 2" first Do the same next for "Layer 3" Next, go to the menus again under "Effects" > "Blur" and select "Radial Blur" From the resulting dialogue box, set the "Angle" according to your taste (and optionally, you can set adjust the "Quality") - The value below in the illustration is set at 33.69 Next, merge your layers down and you're done!
  7. Yes, as a matter of fact I did the AA before merging the 2 round colored images, and twice on each embossed layer as well as gaussian blur at 2.
  8. Sorry this isn't a submission reply, but where is the tutorial (if it exists) on re-texturing like this (or like the cars in the previous comps)? I don't recall having seen one.
  9. Check out the tutorial below, it may help you: http://forums.getpai...nd-image-heavy/ In particular see steps 10-13
  10. I hope this isn't going to "throw a monkey wrench" into this. But maybe this will best illustrate what I'm trying to describe (sorry for the particular model represented below): Note the shading to either side of the forehead area and the center is much lighter. Again, as I previously noted, I understand this is a WIP.
  11. I can't speak for the game you mod for, but I have done mapping for HL1 (in particular Day of Defeat). In Day of Defeat the blue texture when certain attributes are applied to it become invisible. For instance, if an object is made into a func_wall and it has blue to it, that blue will become invisible. The technique is used for such things as a hedge or bush. The hedge texture itself may have some specks of blue and the outline as well would be blue so that you will see through it (the blue) and be able to see tree models (as an example) in the background without the model being cutoff by the blue portion. I could also create a totally blue func_wall which would have the effect of being totally invisible and yet have the attributes of a solid wall so that I could effectively block off an area from being accessed. For instance this could be used for a road which curves away from the play area on the perimeter of the map so the perimeter looks more natural, but doesn't permit players from proceeding down that path/road. I hope this explanation wasn't too confusing. The below picture (though lacking the textures because they weren't loaded for this screenshot) is of a tank coming through a broken wall. The blue shown is the func_wall that I was referring to. It will keep players from exiting the play area by climbing onto the tank and/or the wall. There is also another texture, which is referred to as a "null" texture which is also invisible. It however has different attributes which I will not go into here. Also, as I pointed out, that is a tank coming through the wall. In Day of Defeat mapping, the texture which you currently see above on tank is not visible either. It too has special attributes (namely adds a metal effect to the tank). All you will actually see in-game is the actual tank model. HL2 games in some instances combine this with the model whereas HL1 games are 2 distinctly separate items. Meaning (in HL1) that the texture you see above forms the boundary/shape and applies the metal attributes and another "entity" is the actual model. But in HL2, both co-exist to form a single unit. At any rate, you will need to find tutorials for your mod online to get specific help in that regard. You will also need to know what file formats you can import to utilize and convert for your needs. EDIT: I ran across the below searching for something else. Maybe it will help you. http://cs.elderscrolls.com/index.php/How_To_Create_Texture_Replacers
  12. I found a another batch... these should be worth millions! lol http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n264/CantaLibra/JimPennies.png And this was my "source": http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n264/CantaLibra/JimPenny2a.png
  13. Takiing bids now on a rare uncirculated coin: http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n264/CantaLibra/JimPenny.png Yeah, I messed up on the outer ring. But still all-in-all, not too bad. I may give 'er another try now that I have a better idea of what I'm doing with this.
  14. I just wanted to pass on a couple links for sig tutorials for you (not really much difference between a banner and a sig other than the overall size). If you take the time to go through them you can learn some ins and outs of paint.net: http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/12204-the-1-most-copied-sig-on-the-forum-aka-the-pyrosig/ http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/16395-sharps-line-sig-tutorial/ http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/22425-schnickas-signature-tutorial-image-heavy/ I hope you find them useful.
  15. Sure - and I'm not aware that it has already been requested. But anyways, since it was related to the individual's issue, I thought I'd post it here... plus, I know Rick and others read these as well. I don't want to press it at this time anyways. I'm sure Rick has plenty on his plate currently working towards the next revision, and who knows what would be involved in adding such a feature - I'm willing to bet it would be a bear of an undertaking. So, this can serve as "food for thought" for the time being.
  16. At the end of the tutorial I adjusted the brightness and then toyed with the curves without any expected outcome and got what appears to me to be a slight sandy effect.
  17. I'm not disagreeing with you on this. In my initial post, i said nearly the same thing, I recommended saving at intervals so that the saved files essentially would have different layer versions so that he could save himself some laboriuos work of redoing everything by simply replacing one layer at a particular stage for another. I do not at all recommend leaving the program running. As a matter of fact, the option I presented would be much better because it would not have an effect on something done on subsequent layers. Operating with a "live" history, undoes work done on those other layers. Hence my feature suggestion and recommendation to the original poster. The only reason why i corrected your statement had nothing to do with the project per se, I simply didn't want it understated what paint.net was capable of. Nothing more. My apologies if you thought otherwise.
  18. So cool! Someday (when I grow up), I wanna be just like you!!!
  19. Actually, if you look where the red circles are, the corners are not rounded. The only 1 corner that an appearance of being rounded is the one indicated by the blue circle and it appears there's a misalignment of the red lines that frames the butterfly image that may have been caused by a/the plugin which created the cube (my guess - I haven't read the tutorial). Nonetheless, in the places where corners are apparent (like indicated by the red circles above), the eraser should suffice to erase the points off and round 'em out. As for the area that is indicated by the blue circle, the smudge tool ( http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?showtopic=10634 ) may do the trick.
  20. The problem is because the background originals are not the same size. The newer is larger than the older one. At any rate you can fix this so long as the size differential isn't too dramatic. Import your "cut-out" onto your new (larger) background. When it appears you will notice a frame around the image, and in each corner is a dot. If you click, hold your mouse button, and drag the corner it should enlarge picture. While the image is still selected, click in the middle and hold the mouse button and drag the image to where you want it.
  21. No offense, but not entirely true. I can't speak for the other programs, but in Paint.net for instance, if I create multiple layers then save the file as a bmp (as an example) and all the layers get flattened in the process, so long as the program has not closed out and the image is still active on the screen, the history is still viable, so you can essentially backup in the history (as it is still active) and make more changes. You only lose the history when you close the program and/or image file (by clicking on the X on the mini image of the upper right-hand corner of the screen).
  22. As far as I am aware, once a file is saved and paint.net has been closed, the history is gone, so you can't undo it as the history no longer exists. The only way to fix it at this point would be to re-do the particular layer that is affected. Also, keep in mind to assist you in the future, save your work multiple times as pdn and rename sequentially will help you. example1.pdn, example2.pdn, example3.pdn, etc. This way you can open one of the previous versions and import a layer from it to the current one to save yourself some time. EDIT: While on the subject I would like to mention a thought that crossed my mind a couple days ago about this. I wish to address it here so others more educated than I in the area may be able to comment as to its worthiness: The thought was simply the ability to save something as a "project file" which would inherently save the histories and those histories would have the capability to be selective in nature. Meaning, you highlight a particular portion of the history and simply press the delete key to remove that action. I did not address the issue because I thought that such a feature would possibly make paint.net a resource hog in order to "track and record" those histories to a specific moment in time as it were. But as I say, I don't have any specific knowledge in this area. It seems that the suggestion I provided above in responding to his question would probably be the best alternative.
  23. Hello, welcome to the forums. What you are asking for can easily be accomplished using the gradient tool. Here's a picture of one color fading to another and I'll explain how it is done: First, on the color wheel select your two colors (see lower left of picture). You can select your color by simply clicking on the circular "color wheel". This will designate your primary color. To do your secondary color, from the pull-down (upper left of the same designated area) select "Secondary" and once again click in the color wheel. Next, select the gradient tool from the tool bar (midway up in the above picture on the left). Next, select the "linear gradient" as indicated by the arrow in the upper left corner of the picture. Now, go to the canvas (which should currently be white), click just below it in the center and while still holding your mouse button in, drag your mouse upward to about midway through the canvas. You should now have something similar to what is shown. I hope this helps you. Also, there is a similar request at the link below on fading colors on an image which uses the same technique: http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/23700-how-to-fade-a-picture-into-black-or-any-other-color/ One more note, please read the rules here: http://forums.getpai...his-2010-12-31/ Rule number 6 reads: 6) Thread titles must be descriptive and specific -- NOT generic. You need to use descriptive thread titles. The following are examples of thread titles that are NOT ALLOWED: "Help" "Please help" "I need help" "Can you help" "HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!" (if you post like this you WILL be banned) "Tutorial request" "Feature request" You addressed this as simply "Hi". Although this may get somebody's attention to respond to you, it does not help others who come here looking for the same information that you are asking for. Using a subject like, "Need help fading colors" would have been more appropriate. You can always give people a greeting within the text of your request and using a subject that is more descriptive of your need will provide people to do a search in the forums to find this same information days, weeks, months or even years from now. Thank you.
