Okay. If you have two duplicate layers of the original image, apply pencil-sketch and gradient to the bottom layer, and only the gradient to the top layer. Use the Layer Properties opacity adjustment on the top layer to add some of the dark back to the pencil-sketch.

I'm not really sure what look you're going for specifically, so don't know what to suggest. When you say bright spot in the middle, is that just the part that is at full opacity? Maybe you could post an image.

oma, When using the Full Editor, Thumbnail is at the bottom of the Other styles drop-down menu. Click on the word Thumbnail, then paste in the direct link of your image. No tags needed.

malross , You could get an effect like this by applying Layers > Rotate/Zoom to a duplicate layer with reduced opacity. Then duplicate that layer, apply Rotate/Zoom. Repeat as needed.

The checkerboard indicates transparency. If it is too distracting, position a new layer as bottom layer and Paintbucket fill it with white.

Definitely install those plugins. However, if you don't have Adjustments > Hue/Saturation in the top menu, you do need to upgrade to the latest version of Paint.NET.

welshblue, More seriously, if one produces a scene to be a setting for the sign and the sign is reduced in size, Rotate Zoomed, etc., then posting a full-size flat view of the sign, in addition should be fine. Chris can correct me if I'm wrong about this.
