When you redo the pet, be sure it is surrounded by the gray-and-white checkerboard that indicates transparency when you save. Save as PNG.

When you cut out your pet, be sure that you don't have a white background layer visible. Save as PNG not .jpg. Before saving the cut-out pet, make a rectangular selection around it and crop to selection. If the cut-out pet image is much larger in pixel dimensions than the background, resize it before importing it. Image > Resize

Re: Alpha Mask It's hard to figure why the text is disappearing. You aren't pressing the Delete key to deselect, are you? That's the the only possibility that comes to mind at the moment. -

If you can save as .png from Word 2010, then load that .png into Paint.NET and apply the Grim Color Reaper plugin effect with "What color?" set to white. You may need to adjust the "Color Tolerance" down a bit to get the drop shadow to be transparent black rather than grayish. Grim Color Reaper -

jdanniel, If you want a transparent background with the drop shadow (partial alpha) retained, you need to save as PNG. Because your example is in .jpg filetype, it already has some messy JPEG artifacts that will be difficult to eliminate without damaging the appearance of the text image. Your best bet is to remake the image from scratch, on transparent layers, and save as.png. -
You'll be using the Line/Curve tool to make the line. The line won't actually be red, it's just shown as red in the tutorial to make its size and position show clearly. The information about the angle will show in the status bar at the bottom of the Paint.NET window, not in a little box at the bottom of the canvas as shown. It will only show as you are drawing the line, once you let the mouse button up, the angle info disappears.

Another way to eliminate the black background of the flames is using the Grim Color Reaper plugin effect with "What color?" set to Black. If your Excel table is black text on white background, import the table on its own new layer, then set that layer's blend mode to Multiply. Layer > Layer Properties... F4 -

Manually type it in, yes. The text will have to be edited as image later if a change is needed. Put the text on its own transparent layer and save the .pdn file as well as a flattened file to use on your desktop. You can go back and erase and replace the text in the .pdn file whenever you like. -
