The fourth beta build for paint.net 4.0 is now available!

To install, you can either 1) use the built-in updater from a previous 4.0 build, or 2) use the built-in updater from v3.5.11 if you have "Also check for pre-release (beta) builds", or 3) download it directly at: http://www.getpaint....065.install.zip

  • The Line/Curve tool is now back, and the Line and Curve shapes have been removed from the Shapes tool
  • Improved rendering quality of the Line/Curve tool, especially when antialiasing is disabled
  • The rectangle shape now draws using an "inset" brush stroke. This helps prevents blurriness with odd-sized brush widths
  • Shapes tool now lets you commit by clicking outside of the bounding box of the current shape. (you can also start drawing a new shape via clicking and dragging, of course)
  • Improved rendering quality of brush tools when antialiasing is disabled
  • Improved performance of Shapes and Line/Curve tools on most systems (e.g., less than 8 CPU cores)
  • Improved rendering quality of Image->Resize when using Nearest Neighbor
  • Fixed the Palette chooser in the Colors window, which was going away when you tried to move the mouse to click on one of its items
  • Fixed some broken clipping when using Paste and "Expand Canvas"
  • Intel-based GPUs now default to having hardware acceleration disabled. You may still force it to be enabled from the Settings dialog.
  • When pasting, the PNG format now has a higher priority than CF_DIB, which allows easier access to transparency (alpha) from other applications
  • Tools no longer incorrectly commit when clicking on the currently active layer in the Layers window
  • The layer's opacity was being ignored while drawing if it was the lowest (index zero) layer
  • You can now copy a file from File Explorer and Paste it into Paint.NET (regression from 3.5)
  • Fixed the canvas scroll bars occasionally being incorrect after maximizing the main window and then restoring it
  • Fixed radio button group tab processing
  • Fixed many small miscellaneous crashes
  • New language: Czech

I'm summarizing and consolidating the bug list here a little ... there are 52 fixed bugs since the last public beta  :)

The Shapes tool now occupies a "full width" position at the bottom of the Tools window. Line/Curve is now above it, on the right. (screenshot attached)

Awesome! Is it advisable to enable hardware acceleration with integrated intel hd graphics?

Hello! I have several questions.

1. When working with the tool "Paintbrush" or "Pencil", if the draw line quickly, the line turns smooth.

Hidden Content:

if slowly draw a diagonal line, the line turns rough.

Hidden Content:

Is it a bug?

2.When working with the tool "Move Selected Pixels", while moving the selected area(dotted line) disappears. Is it a bug?

In version 3.5.11, the dotted line does not disappear during the move.

3. Selection border is not displayed correctly, with the large scale.

PaintNetRus ...

1. Not a bug. Those are just the mouse input coordinates that are sent to Paint.NET. It doesn't smooth those out.

2. Not a bug. In 3.5, the dotting line does in fact disappear when you do that.

3. Bug! Thanks, I'll fix it for the next update of course.

Try it. If there are no graphical glitches, then keep it.

Right-clicking when doing transparent gradients (as explained here) still doesn't work. Can we hope for a fix for the next beta? :)

This is Paint.NET 4.0-wide Bug for me:

When clicking very fast with some Tools (Example: Brush or Eraser) i get a pixelated Image next to the Mouse.

Copy that, but I think this is just the "Application busy" cursor of Windows with its shadow not rendered properly. I'm not sure if Rick can fix this.

Bug report:

The bug that right-clicking the colour wheel does not select the secondary colour still persists.

I experienced an interesting crash.  Here's what I did, I ran MadJik's Volutes plug-in (it may nor may not have been updated to v4.0, I haven't checked), and then after that, I rotated what I just rendered.  After that, I duplicated the rotated render, and rotated that layer again.  Once more, I duplicated the duplicated rotated layer, and rotated that layer.  While the selection was still active, I went to hide one of the layer, and that's when the crash occurred.  I don't think I have ever experienced that kind of crash before.

The error log seem to indicate a corrupt memory.  I operate with Windows 8.1 with an i5 processor.

Hidden Content: Crash log.

Edit: I can definitely confirm it is not the plug-in's fault.  I create three basic rectangles, used "Select All" command, then the move tool to rotate, and when I was finished, I click on "Finish" on the toolbar.  Oddly, the selections and nubs stays on the canvas (maybe it's because I am still using the move tool?), and when I click anywhere on the canvas, it causes Paint.NET to crashes.  All of this is happening while I am on a transparent layer.

I included a screenshot so you can see what's happening based on what I have described.

I just noticed in the shapes you have word bubbles. They would actually be useful if the arrow could be repositioned.

Yeah I've fixed that for the next update. It's a purely cosmetic bug, luckily.

hi rick, i just attempted to use the built-in updater and it failed after removing the previous version, just left the paint.net folder and my effects folder, but no .exe or .dll files. i'm using win7 64 bit home premium.

edit: the download zip won't install either, here's the report:
