Paint.NET v3.20 Preview

Recommended Posts

I've talked about 3.20 quite a bit on my blog, http://blog.getpaint.net, but it's time for more of an official unveiling. I've done a lot of work towards making effect plugins easier to develop. Namely, I'm making it much easier to create configuration dialogs that are much more sophisticated. You really just have to provide a list of properties with names, data types (integer, double, vector), default values, and min/max. To that end I have also gone and migrated all of the existing effects (except for Levels, Curves, and Rotate/Zoom) to use this system. And I've also added enhancements to many of them, such as for choosing offsets or scaling factors (Zoom Blur, Twist, Bulge, Radial Blur). Frosted Glass has also been optimized and enhanced based on pyrochild's work on "Frosted Glass+".

And, I've added new UI for the selection tools. You can now choose the selection combination mode in the toolbar, which should make this feature much more discoverable. Previously you had to hold down ctrl or shift or the right mouse button in order to do selection union, subtraction, or inversion ("xor").

For the paint bucket and magic wand, I've added a toolbar item for choosing contiguous vs. global. This is not a new feature, it just makes it much more discoverable.

And the big one: For the Rectangle Selection tool I have added the ability to draw a selection in "Fixed Ratio" and "Fixed Size" modes. So if you want to draw a 4 inches X 6 inches selection, it is now very easy. This will make it trivial to crop images to 16x9 for my new widescreen TV too :P

I'm aiming to have a beta within two weeks, and the final release by mid-December.

Oh and I added Mandlebrot and Julia fractal rendering effects.

The function of ctrl and shift has not been removed, has it?

Anyway, looks like a great update so far!

I hope not, I like the ctrl and shift thing.

Overall, looks awesome!

I have a question.

On some images of the UI with the center selection ability you include a thumbnail image, while in others you do not.

The second one doesn't seem to refer to any particular image, so I wasn't sure if there would be that thumbnail image when we use this sort of effect, or just the blank square?

That's just an older version of the dialog.

Can you set the buttons' FlatStyle to System? It enables Vista's fade effects and makes the UI more consistent.

Other than that, looks great!

You mean for the toolbars, right ... ? Those are custom rendered by .NET, there is no FlatStyle.
