I don't know how to use paint.net

Help. Paint.net did an u pdate which I allowed and now have 5.0 instead of my previous version 4.3.12. I had just started to figure out the previous version and it was doing what I wanted it to do. The update has everything messed up so that I cannot color with it. It is messing up all my drawings. Please how do I put my version back to the previous one? P.S.  I just also send in a donation only to find out this is so messed up.

Please describe your coloring issue in detail. Like what steps are you taking?

Again, please provide details. What is actually happening to your images?

(September 25th, 2023)  Sorry about any broken images in my posts. I am aware of the issue.

Thanks for answering. Don't know how to add a picture here which would show better. Will try to explain. Biggest problem is layers do not seem to be working properly. I can color individual sections of a picture IF I leave it sit on the white background. When I create a separate layer to, for example, color in only the face, the paint bucket spreads the color over the entire image so it is a solid color. Oh just saw the add file. Will see if I can pull some up to show you. The first one still has a white background. The 2nd one I started in my old 4.3.12 version yesterday. It doesn't show it, but there are 2 layers in this one....background is layer 1 and face is on layer 2. The last one is what happened when I have layer marked face open and try to just fill in a face color. I am completely confused here. Thanks for any help.

If you changed the tool/toolbar defaults in Settings, some of those may not have made it across the transition from 4.3.12 to 5.0. You'll have to check on them and re-set them to what you want them to be.

When using the Paint Bucket tool, try changing the Sampling to "Image" instead of "Layer"...

Bolt, just tried that, and it did not solve the issue. See attached files. Face 1 worked when there were no separation of layers. facec is what happened when i chose the face layer and used your suggestion. This one was on a separate layer to begin with and no color at all would appear when on a different layer. The backgound was transparent, and can't get paint bucket to work with a transparent background. Total newbie, so will to try any possible solution. Thanks for trying to help.

Rick, I did not change any settings at all. I am a complete newbie with no clue as to really technical things. My problem is with the paint bucket not working when I put the  images on layers. It works when I leave the complete image sitting on the original white background. See the images above of "face1' . Those worked because I did not

put the face or the hair on separate layers, but left the whole thing on the white background.

I have no idea what the correct default settings should be for the various tools. Any help would be so greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Rick, just on a hunch I took the face on a transparent background, went to settings and saw the tolerance setting for the paint bucket was set at 50%. Looked at my open program and by darn tolerance was set at 85%. Reset it to 50% and it worked. Can;t thank you enough for putting an end to a very frustrating day. Going to mess with that paint bucket some more and hope it is back to normal.😘

The pita is back again, Rick Brewster. Sorry to say the same problem has come up again with paint bucket tool. Settings are correct at 50% tolerance and again it won't work properly when using it on layers. Have watched several Youtube tutorials and checked through the forum and can't find out what might be causing it. It is like it works when it feels like it. Am ready to just give up.

Just to be sure I even deleted the previous Paint.net I had that had updated on Tuesday and did a fresh download.

Same problem with the Paint Bucket tool. Tolerance is set at 50%, Contiguous is  checked, yet it still fills in the entire space of the canvas. Only works correctly with image on a white background, will NOT work on a layer with a transparent background. Ready to just get rid of the program permanently. Never had this problem with any Photoshop program.

  • BoltBait changed the title to I don't know how to use paint.net

The model has gaps in her chin line. This lets the fill leak out.

Go over the chin and thicken up the chin line and you'll be good to go.

Sorry it took me a while to reply to your post. Question I have is WHY do the colors look totally unlike what I originally posted? I did not use those colors. What happened?

I was testing color fill on various regions of the model. I didn't particulalry care what colors I used. When I tried to fill the face the fill leaked out into the background. That was your problem.
