Do you want to make a computer simulation of painting from your favorite photo or image? Then try the free PaintEngine filter from Fantastic Machines.
Despite its venerable age, this filter can still be useful.

How to install

Tip: Create in your Effects folder (C:\Program Files\paint.net\Effects\ for the Classic version, or Documents\paint.net App Files\Effects\ for Microsoft Store version) the Fantastic Machines folder (or name it as you like). This will allow you to organize the work with the filter correctly.

 

Unzip the downloaded file. Put the Pe.8bf and fmachine.ini files to the Fantastic Machines folder.
To work with the filter, you will need the PSFilterPdn plugin by @null54.

 

Introduction

Open your image or photo. Run the PSFilterPdn effect (Effects -> 8bf Filter). Click on the arrow to the left of the Fantastic Machines name, choose the PaintEngine filter and click the Run Filter button.

 

The filter has several controls, but its interface is quite simple and intuitive.

 

The Brush box defines the Intensity, Lighten and Bias parameters of the brush strokes.

The Effect box defines the extent to which the image is filled with a brush (Amount) and its appearance (Wrap Edge).

The Stroke box defines the parameters of brush strokes and has 13 built-in types (Type drop-down list).

 

Try to play with the controls of these three boxes and, having received some result, click the Apply button. To apply an effect to an image, click OK on the 8bf Filter interface.

Using Presets

Let's go back to the filter interface and consider the Settings box. Click on the drop-down list - it is empty now.

Open your Fantastic Machines folder, copy the fmachine.ini file and paste it into the Windows directory (usually C:\Windows). 

 

Open any image. I used this as an example.

 

Run the PaintEngine filter again and click on the drop-down list of the Settings box. You will be offered 74 presets provided with the filter.

Select any preset from this list, for example, arctic. Reduce the Amount to about 1. Click on the Type drop-down list and hover the cursor over the names of the brushstroke types to evaluate the result displayed in the image viewer window. Select Saturation 1 item. Click Apply, then click OK on the 8bf Filter interface.

 

If you are satisfied with the settings applied in PaintEngine, let's save them as a preset. Run the PaintEngine filter again. The PaintEngine filter has remembered your last settings. Click the Save button, enter the name of your preset and click OK.

 

Use the Randomize button (one or more times) to randomly change the settings. If you like the resulting settings, save them as above.

Depending on your taste and needs, you will probably like some of these presets, while others will turn out to be useless. You can always delete these useless presets by selecting each of them in the drop-down list of the Settings box and clicking the Delete button and confirming the deletion.

 

Hint: Try to apply several different PaintEngine presets to the image sequentially in combination with paint.net effects and blending modes and you will get a very interesting result:

 

About the .ini file

A file with the .ini extension is a plain text document designed to store any settings. This means that you can open and edit it in any text editor (for example, Microsoft Notepad, Microsoft WordPad, Notepad++, etc.). In a text editor, this file looks like this:

 

Some features of the .ini file:

• [PaintEngine:Settings] must be the first line in the file.
• The .ini file can contain up to 100 preset definitions, numbered from 00 to 99. If more than 100 entries are in the file, 101 and beyond are ignored.
• If there are settings with duplicate numbers (two or more), for example, Setting22, then the first one in the file will be used, and the rest will be ignored.
• The settings in the drop-down list of the Settings box are listed alphabetically according to the assigned name, regardless of the setting number or the position of the setting in the file.

Run the PaintEngine filter, click the Randomize button

 

and save the received settings with any name. Open the fmachine.ini file in a text editor and go to the lowest line. Your preset string will look like this:

where XX is the preset number, Name is the name of your preset.

 

Let's find out what comma-separated data means after the semicolon:

1...4 - I haven't been able to find out;

5 - state of Input and Line checkboxes:

• 0 - both disabled
• 1 - Line enabled
• 2 - Input enabled
• 3 - both enabled;

6 - line number of the Type drop-down list:

• 0=Uphill
• 1=Downhill
• 2=Random
• 3=Selected
• 4=Intensity 1
• 5=Intensity 2
• 6=Slope
• 7=Uphill+Intensity 1
• 8=Downhill+Intensity 2
• 9=Saturation 1
• 10=Saturation 2
• 11=Hue 1
• 12=Hue 2;

7 - the value of the Motion Angle slider;

8 - the value of the Operation Angle slider;

9 - the value of the Length slider;

10 - I haven't been able to find out;

11 - the value of the Radiate slider multiplied by 100;

12 - the value of the Amount slider multiplied by 100;

13 - the value of the Push Intensity slider multiplied by 100;

14 - the value of the Pull Intensity slider multiplied by 100;

15 - the value of the Push Lighten slider multiplied by 10;

16 - the value of the Pull Lighten slider multiplied by 10;

17 - the value of the Push Bias slider multiplied by 100;

18 - the value of the Pull Bias slider multiplied by 100;

19 - the value of the Motion Angle Curl slider;

20 - the value of the Operation Angle Curl slider;

 

Note that in some cases negative values are indicated with a minus sign, in others - with large numbers (for example, 4294967265 for Operation Angle and 4294967280 for Motion Angle Curl). While in a text editor, you can replace the number 4294967265 with (-31), and the number 4294967280 with (-16) and save your ini file. The PaintEngine filter will accept these values as correct.

 

Now that you know how to edit the fmachine.ini file, you can create a collection of your favorite presets by storing them in your Fantastic Machines folder with a name other than fmachine.ini, for example, fmachine_my_presets.ini.

 

Note: Don't forget to rename your preset file to fmachine.ini when moving it to the directory C:\Windows.

Conclusion

The disadvantages of the above filter include a small image viewing window, the inability to accurately set the values of the sliders and the inability to record the state of the Wrap Edge checkbox in the preset. In everything else you will get a good brushes workshop.

How big are the pictures in this thread? I get a thin bar of each picture as it loads and then it gives up. Internet working fine elsewhere at ~110 mb/s download speed. I'm guessing these are photo-sized and .png. Either that or postimg refuses to serve this much data to me. I can't see what the filter is supposed to do, so if you can resize the pictures, that would be cool

The largest image has a size of 690x690px, the others are smaller.

The Yandex and Firefox browsers open these images without problems, Opera does not always display the images correctly.

If the image is not displayed, I open it by a direct link in a new browser tab.
