  1. That doesn't look like a WinXP dialog box. My guess is, OP is just not caught up on Windows updates. (Moving to Troubleshooting forum.)
  2. I don't understand your question, but you can search for things at http://searchpaint.net.
  3. When the tutorial directs you to the plugin, look at the top of the page. Right under the Paint.NET logo, you'll see a line of text that tells you which forum you're in. For instance, here's the one for this thread: Paint.NET Forum → Paint.NET → Paint.NET Discussion & Questions As you can see, we're in the "Paint.NET Discussion & Questions" forum. If it says Paint.NET Forum → Paint.NET → Plugins - Publishing ONLY! → FileType Plugins ...those plugins are FileType plugins. All others go in Effects. Make sense?
  4. Actually, I can solve that pretty simply for you. They're already so sorted Plugins in the "File Types" subforum (here) go in the Filetypes folder; every other plugin goes in the Effects folder. Easy-peasy.
  5. It isn't unpredictable. Likely you're just accidentally changing your workflow slightly each time; since you don't know what steps are important yet, it's easy to forget or omit a step without realizing it. As you get more proficient, things will become more consistent. Technically speaking, that area of pixels is still selected, though now on the current layer. This is so that you can make seperate edits to the same area of pixels on multiple layers, one after the other. The checkerboard represents transparency. You're moving the pixels and revealing the transparent area underneath. Think of the checkerboard as the table upon which you've layered two clear plastic sheets with paint on them; when you move one of the sheets, you see the table underneath. Correct; the selected area will be the only one which is affected by any edits you make. To edit the entire layer, deselect the area by hitting Ctrl+D or Edit > Deselect. Word files aren't allowed, but JPEGs should be. Were you uploading them in a folder? The forum works fine. See? Here's an image:
  6. That plugin pack has been updated since the release of Paint.NET 4.0, so it should work, but the only way to be 100% sure that the pack works with the latest version is to test it. Since many people have downloaded it since its update and no major issues have been reported, I think you'll probably be fine. And there is a 100% probability that there will be bugs, as no software is perfect. But if you save often, you should be fine. You don't risk anything by trying a plugin, as long as you're saving regularly. :-) I'd say, go for it. Download, install, try it out.
  7. I do agree that there is an assumption of basic knowledge that must be made in writing documentation. The big question is, how do we get people from their current level of understanding to that basic knowledge level? How basic do we make that barrier to entry before we risk alienating more proficient users? Sounds like you've discovered some locations where we need to pull back the curtain a little bit, and for that we thank you!
  8. I think we should continue to post video tutorials in the proper subforum for what they teach, but have a thread which links to them as a sort of "tag system" so that people can view tutorials that are in a video format. If someone creates that thread and is willing to keep it up, I'll be happy to pin it!
  9. You can, but why would you? Using layers allows you to rearrange, resize, and modify each image without affecting the others. Layers is one of the best parts of Paint.NET. I recommend you use layers. :-)
  10. Redacted my original post! My apologies. Reading too quickly and thought it was just an error report!
  11. Within the last few weeks, actually, the documentation has been updated - have you read it recently? I think it reads a lot better. In this case, the document writers are Paint.NET users themselves, not the app developers.
  12. This forum is for publishing only. Please post this error in the Asmageddon pack thread. Thanks. Locked.
  13. You never know, if your external utility is good enough, it might eventually become an internal utility. Happened with...uh...something. Something of BoltBait's, I think. Maybe Gaussian Blur +?
  14. 1. No necroposting, no matter the reason. Since you apologized, you know it's wrong. It's been over a year. Don't do it. Start a new thread instead. 2. Come on, man. Never tell a programmer something should be "trivial" - you don't know the codebase or program architecture, you have no idea. For all you know, it would take a complete rewrite of the program and a precise alignment of Mars and Jupiter to make it happen. 3. If you want to contribute, write a plugin. It wouldn't be able to interact directly with the canvas, but building a "sub-canvas" that then writes to the main canvas is not only possible, but has been done before. For all of these reasons (but mostly just #1), I'm locking this thread. Don't take it personally. :-)
  15. I would recommend ditching Norton and using a good antivirus. :-)
  16. Not liking Windows 8 is actually a great reason to upgrade to 10.
  17. Heads-up from a formerly serious Wikipedian: Be careful editing an article about a topic you're closely associated with. Don't want to be accused of bias. :-) Not that I'm accusing any of you of that. Just a heads-up.
  18. I hate to argue with pdnnoob's moderating, but actually, you should be posting this in the thread for that plugin. In this case, dpy's plugin pack. :-) If you need more assistance, please post there. Thanks!
  19. We can pin YouTube tutorials in the Tutorials forum if they're posted or authorized by the original author and they're good enough. :-) I think that's probably the best any of us (volunteers) are able to commit time to.
  20. To add on: Seeing the checkerboard pattern means that there are no opaque pixels above that section of the image. After you've finished edits, make sure you hide the new white layer or your image will not have any transparency when saved.
  21. I think the fresh install is the problem. After you install Windows 10, it begins installing more updates in the background, even if you haven't told it to. Wait a little bit and try again.
  22. No, sorry; the "recent" menu serves a purpose like bookmarks. If you don't have the file, it won't find it.
  23. You're correct, you can work on any layer at any time. You may be making the edits, but be unable to see them. Try turning off the top layer so you can see the bottom layer you're working on.
  24. You're not wrong, but in this case there were extenuating circumstances. We risked banning a very large number of people if we banned his IP range, and we'd prefer to not block off (potentially) an entire country for one person's idiocy.
