A very useful tool, thanks. Could it be possible to add other shapes such as pentagons, hexagons and octagons?
No problem. I'll look at adding these later today.

I just don't understand this attitude in regard to questions about using older PDN versions.
Time management and allocation of resources. Rick is moving forward with PDN 5+. There isn't time to support/help/debug/assist users with problems usually stemming from a legacy version.
In this case the OP wants to reinstall an old version of PDN when the correct path forward is to update the plugins. This advice was given by Rick himself.

where do I start if I want to develop a plugin for Paint.net?
CodeLab 👍
BoltBait has written a number of excellent, comprehensive tutorials to get you started.....https://boltbait.com/pdn/codelab/help/

however, the image it produced cannot be saved.
Are you using Save As...?
Remember to save in a format which supports transparency (like *.PNG & not JPG)

Open Levels (Ctrl + L) and play with the top Input control and/or the middle control on the Output side.
Does that do what you want?
-
Do you mean Adjustments > Auto-Level? Shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + L

Show us a screenshot of your Effects folder so we can see what files are in there.

Let's use the chessboard as an example.
In order to select the board from the white background I'd have to zoom...Nope. Try this.....
- Activate the Magic Wand tool
- Click on the white background
- Invert the selection with Ctrl + I
Your example is also a great case for putting your elements on different layers. If the chessboard was on its own layer you could move the entire layer without needing to select anything
PS Nice board! (but its misaligned)

A long time ago I wrote a little tiling plugin called Echo. It was part of a set of Stereogram plugins I was developing.
All it did was tile the top left corner across & down.
I didn't release the plugins publicly, however you can find Echo here:

Hi Rick,
Found another one
Rectangle Selection tool + Fixed Ratio or Fixed Size.
I used to be able to tab between the Width & Height fields. Tabbing off the Width now loses focus and disappears.

- the colorpicker picking the opacity. LIKE NOOOOO. how am I supposed to paint?
The Color Picker accurately reflects the color you click on, opacity included.
If you don't like this behavior, enlarge the Colors window and set the Opacity slider to maximum (after you've Color-Picked the correct color).

I was wondering if there is a way to customize the shortcut keys?
There isn't. Sorry. When this is asked we generally point users to a keyboard macro recorder

Try using Revo Uninstaller to remove any traces of PDN. Then try reinstalling the latest version.

How can I clear my canvas to how it was upon creating it (i.e. a white background) without starting a whole new project? Thanks
Assuming you have multiple layers:
- Ctrl + F (Flatten)
- Ctrl + A (select All)
- Shift + Backspace (Fill with Secondary color where the default = White)
If you have only a single layer you can omit step #1.

Also.... double-click on the layer name in the Layers Window!
PRO-TIP: You don't need to select the layer name to type in something new as the text box will have the focus. Just start typing when the dialog opens

Is there a way to get the kaleidoscope plug in?
Go to the Plugin Index and type in the Search term kaleidoscope - there are eight hits for paint.net plugins......
-
AFAIK the only plugin from this pack showing errors in 5.0 is Scriptlab.

No one has & we discourage bundling plugins like this. All the filetype plugins are located here: https://forums.getpaint.net/forum/46-filetype-plugins/. You can also locate them using the Plugin Index

Find your image file using File Explorer. Right click > Restore previous versions might give you an option.
