The fifth alpha build for paint.net 4.0 is now available! This is the last planned alpha release, which means beta is next and it'll become available to v3.5.11 users if they have "Also check for pre-release (beta) releases" enabled.

Here's a direct download link if you don't already have a previous alpha build installed (in which case you'd just use the built-in updater): http://www.getpaint....275.install.zip

Here are the changes between the previous build (5105) and this one (5143):

  • Cropping after several simple selection manipulations (e.g. move, scale) would often result in an extra row or column of blank pixels in the cropped image
  • Move Layer Up/Down would often result in the wrong scroll location in the Layers window
  • Panning the canvas via holding the spacebar and click-and-drag of the left mouse button was still panning even after the mouse button was released, but before the spacebar was
  • Clone Stamp tool now uses the Primary color's alpha value (or Secondary if you use the right mouse button)
  • Fixed a crash that would happen if you clicked on the image list dropdown button (to the right of the image thumbnail list) too quickly after opening a large image
  • The Move tools would revert changes made with the keyboard if the Enter or Esc keys were pressed too quickly afterwards
  • Using the "Check Now" (for Updates) button in the Settings dialog did not close the application if you had any images open which had unsaved changes
  • Fixed some issues with the Colors window whereby left clicking would reset the Primary/Secondary choice to Primary
  • The floating window positions (Tools, History, Layers, Colors) were not being persisted across sessions
  • Plugins can now retrieve the correct value for CurrentCulture and CurrentUICulture from any thread
  • Fixed some rather pernicious crash bugs in several tools related to a "Committing changes" dialog popping up during click-and-drag operations
  • Clicking and dragging on handles in the Gradient tool was lagging behind by 1 frame of mouse movement
  • Fixed a focus bug on startup whereby you couldn't use keyboard commands until you clicked on the canvas
  • Fixed a crash on Win7 when switching from Aero to Classic theme
  • Settings dialog now works correctly in High Contrast mode
  • Fixed the pixel grid being off by 1 screen pixel (it didn't line up with the ruler)
  • Fixed a CPU usage issue with the Move and Shape tools. They were running the animations and UI code even if the UI wasn't visible yet (e.g. no selection / no shape).
  • The "OK" button wasn't working in the New Image, Resize, and Canvas Size dialogs when the rest of the application's CPU usage was very high (e.g. slow CPU, slow GPU, disabled hardware acceleration)
  • Reduced CPU usage of animated UI elements, especially when not the active application or when the user has disconnected (locked workstation, Remote Desktop)
Enjoy!

Neat.  Ver 4 is looking better with every update.  Only I found an interesting issue:  Using the Rectanbgle Select in a Fixed Ratio, when selecting an area from the center towards an edge of the image, the selection area extends beyond the fixed ratio.  It's fine if you stopped once you've dragged to the edge, but if you continue dragging the area extends along the edge.

That's not a bug, that's by design. Normal selection drawing is always clipped to the image boundaries.

Is it just me still having this problem ? ( I know Rick couldn't repro it in the last version)

Have a background layer >>> Add a New Layer >>> Type text >>> Set Magic Wand to Global - 50% >>> Click outside the text and there's 'artifacts'

Ok now it repros quite easily. I don't think you mentioned the "Global" part before.

Quite possibly.  I'm not the best for explaining things.

The Pan and the Zoom Tool show the "Selectiion Clipping Mode" option (new in PDN4). Makes no real sense, or?

Sure it does. Try zooming in and then toggling that. It will switch between showing you the full fidelity selection, or a "pixelated" selection.

I know. That's what this option is for in PDN4. Tools typically just showing the set of global options they are using to do their job. Now i.e. zoom, pan and the color picker allow to change this option w/o any effect to their job.

But it's not an important story, just a question of design for non power users.

It looks great!

I don't know if others have this problem, but the icons in the upper right (tools, history, layers, colors, settings and help) are miniscule -- so small, it's almost impossible to see them.

I think it might have to do with resolution and scaling. I'm using Windows 8 on a laptop with a resolution of 3200x1800 on a 13-inch screen. Windows should scale up everything, but either those icons are not being scaled or if they are, they are simply much smaller than the other icons.

I can provide a screenshot if it helps.

Please provide a screenshot (and maybe a picture taken with a camera. I would like to see how it looks on such a device ;-).

It's always the best to provide Rick as much information as possible.

Pretty sure there is a scaling issue as you are assuming. In general Paint.NET is quite good in handling non 96dpi screens (compared to other applications).

Using the history window to undo an entire curve (both splines and bezier curves) causes paint.net to crash. Incredibly annoying when you're basically drawing an entire image out of bezier curves...

Reproduce:
-Open a new image
-Draw curve
-Press ctrl+d or whatever method you prefer to finish the curve
-Undo both of the actions in one click in the history window by clicking on "new image"

I just fixed this last night. It was a bug that I was procrastinating until Beta.

Thanks for all the work Rick

... this next thing doesn't happen all the time, or with all files. I first noticed it with the first Beta version.
Sometimes when you save a file all the thumbnail isn't there

example1.jpg

and when that happens, when you open the file a blend mode may have changed (example below)

th_example2.jpg

It resolves itself if you open the file, make the changes you wanted and re-save.

Hope that makes sense

This is the last planned alpha release

The German translation is still a mess. Even in the installer. Where can I help/change that?
