HEIC File Support?

Recommended Posts

  • 4 months later...

Ditto. I use only Windows computers and tablets and now have upgraded my phones to new Galaxies with native support for HEIC/HEIF files.

I had expected that by installing the Microsoft HEIF/HEIC codec from the Windows Store would allow for my (Windows Store ver) Paint.net would also allow me to open, edit and save HEIC files, but that wasn't the case.

Now I don't see any HEIC codec plug-in for Paint.net either -- I find this really odd.

Is there any effort to add new codecs such as HEIC to Paint.net either natively (preferred) or via a plug-in (pack) -- would it be possible for Paint.net to leverage the MS HEIF/HEIC codec support?

I'm planning to add HEIC support in 4.1.7. It will require that you have Windows 10 v1809+ installed, as it has the HEIC codec built-in. I'm currently migrating many of the other file types from GDI+ to WIC, and once that's done it shouldn't be too difficult to add HEIC support.

Saving HEIC files may need to wait for Windows 10 v19H1 or whatever the next big update is.

And, just to be clear, Windows 7 and 8.1 will not be able to work with HEIC files in 4.1.7. They do not have the WIC codec for HEIC.

Wonder if saving works now?  If so, what's the min Win 10 version? 🤔

paint.net 4.2 - released on July 13th, 2019
This is a big update that focus on adding HEIC file format support, fixing performance with very large images, and upgrading and modernizing the functionality of many existing file types (JPEG, PNG, BMP, GIF, and TIFF).

....

New: Support for loading and saving HEIC images (Windows 10 v1809+ and codec installation is required). Please note that the "Quality" slider when saving is limited to a value of 90 (out of 100) while Microsoft investigates and fixes a crash in their codec.

As far as I know...

1) Please don't post on old threads.  The original poster asked the question 2 years ago and they probably have moved on by now.

2) Please don't post if you don't know what you're talking about.  In fact, Paint.NET does have an HEIC filetype plugin which can be downloaded here:

https://forums.getpaint.net/topic/116873-heic-filetype-plus-09-27-2020/

This allows HEIC files to be loaded and saved by Paint.NET.

In the future, if you want to know if something like that is available, just check the Plugin Index and search for HEIC.

I'm closing this thread to prevent more nonsense.
