StringCheese Posted February 19, 2018 Share Posted February 19, 2018 Hello, I downloaded a set of some box art for my retro gaming system and noticed that some pictures are displayed with no background and some are white backgrounds on the emulator with a black screen as the backdrop. This only happens with a black backdrop. If the picture is going onto something that has background color (or another picture) the white border doesn't show up and the background remains transparent. The best way for me to describe it is imagine a logo on a black shirt. Some you only see the picture while others have a square picture with the background as white and the picture in the middle. I opened up both types of pictures in paint.net and they are all showing transparent backgrounds. Does anyone have an idea of how to change the ones that show the white background to be truly transparent? I assume it is some adjustment with transparency or layers but I haven't found the right combination to change the picture to display without the white border. Why are some doing this and some not? Pixey Posted February 19, 2018 Share Posted February 19, 2018 Hello @StringCheese and Welcome to the forum We have a great Search option found here. So, if you have a perfectly white or black background you could use the magic wand to 'Select' the background and then hit delete. You can then use the Plugin AA's Assistant to clean up the edges. Then Save As a .png and the background will stay transparent. Or, you can cut out the image using this method found here. I hope you find these helpful. StringCheese Posted February 19, 2018 Author Share Posted February 19, 2018 Thanks Pixey but I guess my post was a little confusing. I have attached some pictures to better explain. As you see the picture does have a transparent background but it shows up with the white background in the program. I have attached another picture to show what another box art looks like without the white background. It has the same transparent (checkerboard) background when opened in paint.net. The picture you sent looks confusing. How are you deleting the transparent background and making it gray? When I do what you are saying it stays the same checkerboard appearance. Yes, it appears your image does have a background that is transparent. So why does that other program display transparency differently (black vs white) depending on the image? I'm not sure, but it could be the RGB values. That is to say, one image uses Transparent White (255, 255, 255, 0), while the other uses Transparent Black (0, 0, 0, 0). In the example I gave you, I was removing the white/grey around your 2nd image, to then show the checkerboard transparency. Remember that, although you may have an image on a transparent background, once you place it into a web page, or other program it will take on the color of where you are placing it. i.e. When we enter images to the Object of the Fortnight competition, we have to enter them on a transparent background. But when you view them, they show up on a white background. I then used the paint bucket with the setting set to overwrite instead of normal. As you can see from the screen shot below I got the values set where I want them. I would think that the problem would be with the other 'program' but some of the box art shows up with no white background. I will attach one of those for reference as well. It does have the transparent black settings that I thought I duplicated but to no avail. So I have attached the original picture that shows up with the white back ground, the copy I converted to transparent black, and then one picture that it does show up in the program with no white back ground. That picture is the baseball game. I was wondering if I just copied the box and then made a totally new file and did that with the black transparent settings if that would solve the problem. I tried doing that but I don't see how you change the transparency settings before you delete it or use the scissors tool after selecting the background with the magic wand tool. Pixey Posted February 23, 2018 Share Posted February 23, 2018 They are ALL perfectly transparent when opened in PDN Are you 100% sure you saved them to PNG and not to JPEG? Look what happens when I saved one of your images to JPEG and then brought it back into PDN. It shows with a white background. Don't worry about it anymore. It was worth a try. The community is great. Pixey - yes I did save them as png files. I double checked. In the grand scheme of things it is a relatively small issue if that. I just like trying to figure out the problem. That is fun to me but enough brain power has been extended on this one....hah!
