Nope, won't work. Just tested with a gradient, the value of a (0,255,0,0) px become (255,255,255,255) and so on (: Need some Codelab stuff IMHO.

I don't think so. The basic, simpliest tools are displayed on the "tool"bar, and in the tools window, for advanced features (like curves & so) you need to search in menus and sub-menus, so you can just ignore them. Edit: Moreover, several versions will add confusion.
