  1. Hi! Welcome to the forums! The paint.net forums are for everyone, and what I like most about this place is that it is family friendly, so family oriented types of people are completely welcome here! Just be sure you read the forum rules, if you haven't already done so yet. Oh, and from what you said here... Be sure both your paint.net and your plugins are up to date (this plugin pack has tint for paint.net 4.0+). Also, be careful that your plugins aren't from bad websites, or that you don't have the megalo pack (read about it here: Megalo = VIRUS!). And, if you like drop shadows, as you spoke of here: Then maybe you would like my drop shadow tutorial? It's not exactly a tutorial for scrap-booking exclusively, but maybe you or your beginner friends would find it useful. For another tutorial, I got pretty detailed in my gradient blending tutorial, perhaps you might like it too? And this tutorial here is a great one, it might be perfect for scrap-booking ideas. Now then, it's wonderful to have another paint.net fan popping onto the forums. I hope you enjoy your time here!
  2. Yup, zooming is paint.net's way of doing things. To help your work flow go more smoothly, it is recommended that you learn shortcut keys. This can make zooming in and out quick and more efficient. For Zooming, here are some suggestions : -- Try the Zoom Tool (Z), left click zooms in, right click zooms out, click and drag to zoom in on an area. Once zoomed in hit the shortcut key to the tool you want to use. -- Explore the "View" tab up in the menu bar to see some zooming functions and learn what their shortcut keys are. -- Look to the bottom right corner of paint.net, there you can click on the zoom's % to type in exact zooms or use the zoom slider. There is also the icon for "view actual size/fit to screen", which is handy if you zoom in close and want a quick way to zoom back out. -- Also, holding down the ctrl key on your keyboard while scrolling with your mouse wheel will zoom you in and out (as mentioned by pdnnoob). A bit of an odd suggestion, you could try using window's magnifier. Sorry, I haven't played with the magnifier in a long time, you'll have to see which magnifying mode, if any, might be able to help.
  3. Hello. I'm writing this to you because I'm hoping you will read it. Age doesn't have to matter, but mature people and good moderators will have patience and read through even lengthy forum posts. If someone wants to be a moderator, then they need to learn what a moderator even does. Yes moderators are their to help people, but that's not all they do. Moderators moderate a forum to make sure rules are followed, to watch that people are behaving and being respectful of each other, the forums are kept clean from spam, moderators ban people, and they manage threads such as moving them and locking them. People need to think carefully if they want to help people or if they want to be a moderator to manage the forums. If people want to help other people, then they can. You don't have to be a moderator to help people. If people really have a heart for helping other people, then nobody is stopping them from helping others except themselves. Everyday average people can be like invisible super heroes . If they're not looking to help people for the sake of recognition and fame, then they should be fine with helping without the title of moderator. So, how can people help other people? In the real world, off the internet, give people food, if a person drops something pick it up for them, go clean up litter and trash in your town, look for little things you can do and then do as many of them as you can. What about helping people online? The best way to help people on the internet is to teach them or be able to answer their questions. You don't need to be a moderator in order to answer people's questions. Alright, how do you answer people's questions? You need to learn and gain knowledge, you have to have answers in order to give answers. When people come to forums, it's normally because they want answers that will help them with specific issues. Here is an example to consider; you can't save a drowning person if you yourself don't know how to swim. So then, if you want to help with a game, then learn the game and gain knowledge of the game. When you know enough about the game, you will then be able to help give answers about the game. If you want to help with paint.net, then learn about paint.net and how to use it. If you become an expert in a game or a more advanced user of paint.net, then you can be a super helpful person by making good quality tutorials. However, you need to know what a bad tutorial is and what a good tutorials is, or you won't be helping anyone, you will just be making clutter that will be both annoying to other users and a hindrance to the moderators. You want to help people right? Then remember, being mean doesn't help people. Being annoying doesn't help people. Being inconsiderate doesn't help people. If you can't be a moderator, then help the moderators by sticking to forum rules and encouraging others to stick to the rules. Forum rules exist in order to keep forums safe, organized, respectful, and for paint.net's forum rules, they help keep the forums family-friendly. By supporting the rules and valuing them, you are supporting the community and helping to keep it safe and welcoming to other users. If you want to help the community, then you should value the rules, because their purpose is to help the community. Remember, moderators are part of the forum community too. By disobeying the forum rules you are being disrespectful to the moderators. Respect the community, and respect the moderators . Being disrespectful can sometimes be considered rude and mean . Now then, if you truly have your heart set on being a forum moderator, then perhaps you should consider having your own forums. Make one here: http://www.createaforum.com/
  4. Alternative suggestion: Once you duplicate the eye, the eye is on its own layer, right? If each eye is on its own layer you can flip the layer by going up to the menu > layers > flip. Then you can use the move selected pixels tool and the arrow keys on your keyboard to move the eye with precision.
  5. You probably read a thread suggesting help for an older version of paint.net. In paint.net 4.0 you can reset the tools by clicking paint.net's settings icon in the upper right corner of the program, and then when in the settings dialog box click "tools", and then look for the "reset" button. Here is paint.net's documentation. Also, be sure you don't accidentally have an active selection on, de-select (ctrl + d) to remove any selections you might have. If you have a selection and want it to remain, then be sure to draw inside of the selection.
  6. Congratulations everyone! Nice set of entries this time and a fair amount of participants. Thank You all who entered and voted, and a special thanks to our special host!
  7. Hi. You might like reading through these old threads, which talk about plugins others like and use : What are your most used plugins? Best Paint.NET Plug-ins?
  8. As Eli has recommended, type your text on it's own layer. You can learn about layers here : http://www.getpaint.net/doc/latest/WorkingWithLayers.html
  9. If you just want straight lines with paintbrush/eraser type of tools, like what photoshop and other similar programs do, then I too would like to see this in paint.net. It is this feature that I am voting for. (You click once with the paint brush, then you hold shift and click in a new spot, and a straight line is drawn from point A to point B. As seen in this video @ 14:21 - 16:4.) However, if you want a pen/path type of tool, then the line/curve tool is paint.net's version of that, or you can check out some plugins. -- http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/26552-peephole-drawing-or-some-path-tools-in-the-future/ -- http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/27512-trs-splinemaster-v142-a-line-maker-march-72015/ -- http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/32096-shapemaker-by-the-dwarf-horde-aug-7-2015/ Also, here are a couple of tips that you might like. The line/curve tool can almost mimic the paintbrush, eraser, and pencil tools. Tip: Most drawing tools, including the Line/Curve tool, are able to be used as erasers. 1) Choose a drawing tool, such as the line/curve tool. 2) Then in the colors window click "More". Set the Transparency - Alpha to 0. 3) Then up under the menu bar, look for where it says "Normal" and change it to "Overwrite". Your line/curve tool can now erase like the eraser tool. Read the last part of this document page to know more http://www.getpaint.net/doc/latest/BlendModes.html If you use the line/curve tool to cut out objects from their backgrounds, and the edges aren't as smooth as you would like, then I suggest edge smoothing plugins. -- Feather. -- AA's Assistant. Feathering the edge of something can give similar results as if you used the eraser tool with a soft edge. Another tip: The line/curve tool can be made to draw lines that are similar to the pencil tool. Turn off the anti-aliasing and change the brush width to 1. Soft Line Tip: Want a soft line? Draw your lines on their own layer and then apply a blur or feather to that layer. (it's not as good as a soft brush, but it's not too bad.) Honestly, from a different view point, it almost sounds like you want the line/curve tool to gain the paint brush's capabilities, such as the softness/hardness adjustment. For my personal opinion though, I really love the current line/curve tool and I really like the lines it produces. I don't know if I would like a soft/hard adjustment for the line/curve tool if it meant changing how the current lines look. So, the options you could think about are either give most the tools a straight line ability, or make the line/curve tool have the paint brush's abilities, or have both ideas?
  10. I'm really bad at free-hand tools, like the lasso. If you want to edit the subject of your photo and the background separately, then you might want to cut the subject out and put it on it's own layer. Here are some ways to cut out items from pictures : This tutorial shows how to delete the background, for your picture though, instead of deleting the background you can copy and paste your subject onto a new layer. http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/13796-cutting-out-images/ In this old mini tutorial I briefly example multiple ways to cut out a subject. Maybe one of the ways shown will interest you. I also give links to plugins that help smooth and/or blend the edges of the cut out object. http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/28375-can-someone-turn-these-pics-into-a-silhouette-for-me/#entry409078

  13. I did a quick test. I can now see the controls. Your exposure advise worked. Thanks.
  14. Hello. I finally wanted to try this plugin out. Unfortunately, I've run into a few problems. I'm not sure how the plugin is supposed to normally work, so maybe some of these things are fine. - The UI control area seems to be cut off on my screen. I think I can see the edge of it a little in the upper right. http://s5.postimg.org/6l1qkh0pj/TRDodge_Burn_Whereis_UI.jpg - When I clicked to at least see what would paint, nothing happened. Not sure if I need to select an effect first, like burn or dodge, but since I can't see the control area I can't do that. - When I "Restore Down" the window isn't an adjustable scalable window. Some of my Display details : My computer monitor's native resolution is 1920 x 1080. I have my computer's "Display" setting to Medium - 125%. http://s5.postimg.org/7foa6i8k7/Windows_7_Display_125.png My PC Specs : Hidden Content: Application paint.net 4.0.6 (Final 4.6.5693.28) Build Date Monday, August 03, 2015 Hardware accelerated rendering (GPU) True Animations False DPI 120.00 (1.25x scale) Language en-US OS Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (6.1.7601.65536) .NET Runtime 4.0.30319.34209 Physical Memory 1,790 MB CPU AMD Athlon II X2 215 Processor Architecture x86 (32-bit) Process Mode 32-bit Speed ~2700 MHz Cores / Threads 2 Features DEP, SSE, SSE2, SSE3 Video Card AMD 760G Dedicated Video RAM 253 MB Dedicated System RAM 0 MB Shared System RAM 639 MB Vendor ID 0x1002 Device ID 0x9616 Subsystem ID 0x360017AA Revision 0 LUID 0x00008FF5 Flags None Outputs 1
  15. Would color removing plugins help? There are ways to remove things like a white background, or if you use the color picker tool and then a color removing plugin you can remove almost any color you want. Grim Color Reaper http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/15595-grim-color-reaper-plugin/ Cut Color http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/18769-cut-color-effect/ HSV Eraser http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/31843-hsv-eraser/
  16. MJW's idea of using a color removing plugin is a good idea. If it interests you, I have previously given brief ways on how to cut out objects from their backgrounds, maybe one of the ways mentioned will be helpful to you. Here is a link to my old post : http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/28375-can-someone-turn-these-pics-into-a-silhouette-for-me/?p=409078
  17. Hi. Thanks for the video. That video is perfect, I was hoping we had the same idea in mind, it makes explaining easier. I have seen videos for that method myself, and have been playing around with it, so I do know a few plugins that might help. When removing a subject from it's background, you will want to duplicate the image. I often don't like to change or edit the original, so I duplicate twice. One layer stays untouched and invisible (Original Layer), one layer will be the layer I cut the subject out from (Cutout Layer), another layer is what I turn into a mask (Mask Layer). To some-what mimic the video, you will want to make a mask of your picture. (duplicate the picture, and turn it into a silhouette) The video turned their picture into a mask by first using channels to choose the channel that had the most contrast. It then used the Levels Adjustment to adjust the contrast more. Paint.net has the Levels Adjustment, and channel plugins, however, for making a mask, there are also other plugins that can give different or better results, depending on the picture you are working with. Here are some plugins you can try and experiment with : The Extract Channels plugin is part of this plugin pack : http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/18811-ed-harvey-effects-v-35-2012-02-13/ There is something called Color Channel Mixer, but I don't remember what it does : http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/14522-color-channel-mixer/ The Gradient Mapping plugin surprisingly can give good contrasting results : http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/6265-gradient-mapping/ My favorite plugin lately would have to be the Two Tone Threshold plugin : http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/29450-two-tone-threshold-new-30th-july-2014/ Aside from using plugins and the Levels adjustment, paint.net also has the basic Black and White Adjustment and the Brightness/Contrast adjustment, sometimes for simple pictures, they're all you need. (They are located under the Adjustments Tab) Important Note. To make your subject a completely solid color, but keep the hair clean and not coarse as the video called it, you can use the paintbrush. Use adjustments and plugins to get your hair looking good, then for making the rest of the subject into a solid color, color it with the paintbrush (the video mentions this too). There is also the line/curve tool if you are poor at doing things free-hand. After you have a silhouette/mask of your picture, I can suggest two ways of removing the background from your picture : Use the Magic Wand on Global Flood Mode to select the background on the Mask Layer, then for visual reasons turn the Mask Layer off. Click on the Cutout Layer and hit delete on your keyboard. Or I personally don't always care for the results of the Magic Wand, so an alternative is to use the Alpha Mask Plugin. The Alpha Mask plugin works both with masks on your clipboard and it can import masks. To use the plugin with the clipboard option, -- Make a mask of your picture. -- Copy your mask (ctrl + c), and for visual reasons turn the Mask Layer off. -- Click on your Cutout Layer and run the Alpha Mask Plugin. If you have questions, feel free to ask.
  18. I don't have a steady hand either. For things where precision is needed, I often zoom in and use the arrow keys on my keyboard to move things one pixel at a time. Making sure objects are each on their own layers helps for overlapping objects too. I haven't used this plugin much, so not sure if it's what you want or not, but maybe it can help too? http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/4193-align-object-plugin-updated-06172007/
  19. We have plugins that can do some of what photoshop can do. Do you have any tutorials you liked? Maybe if I watch them I can suggest paint.net alternative methods and plugins.
  20. Would it be possible for Shape Maker (or another plugin) to have a bitmap tracing ability like Inkscape has? This website shows/explains the functionality a little : http://blog.tiaan.com/link/2009/02/21/vectorize-bitmaps-to-xaml-using-potrace-inkscape
  21. Sorry, I also don't really know what you mean by, "change the hue of a picture in a gradient". In the adjustments tab you can change an image's color with either Hue/Saturation, Levels, or Curves (curves tutorial). See the paint.net documentation to know the basics of paint's adjustments: http://www.getpaint.net/doc/latest/AdjustmentsMenu.html Or perhaps the gradient mapping plugin can help you? (how to install plugins?) http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/6265-gradient-mapping/ Here is a tutorial on gradient mapping. http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/6398-the-wonderful-world-of-gradient-mapping/ If you want plugins that help to re-color an image, here are a few: Recolor Choice Hue/Saturation Plus Conditional Hue/Saturation Edit: After reading pdnnoob's reply and re-reading your question, maybe this is what you are wanting: 1) Add a new layer above your image. 2) Change the layer's blending mode to overlay, or multiply, or to whichever blending mode you want. 3) Use the Gradient tool with your desired colors to draw a gradient on the new layer. It's simple, but it will change your image's colors and can look cool depending on the colors and blending mode you use.
  22. 1) Have both your black object and the object that has the color you like open in paint.net, each on their own canvas. 2) Use the "Color Picker" tool to get the color from the pink object. 3) Return to your black object and add a new layer above it. Set the new layer's blending mode to "Overlay" or "Multiply". 4) Use the "Fill Tool" to fill the new layer. 5) Carefully erase any pink that you don't want, for example, if you want the wheels to still be black erase the pink on the pink filled layer at those places. Click for larger view: http://s5.postimg.org/triq3pjkn/Black_to_pink_Objects.jpg If you want to adjust the lightness of the object, click on the black object layer and then go up to the Menu Bar > Adjustments > Brightness/contrast. (Levels & Curves can adjust brightness/contrast too) If you want to further adjust the color of the object, go to the adjustments tab and try playing around with hue/saturation, levels, or curves.
  23. It sounds like you are experiencing a browser hijacking. I don't think this is paint.net's fualt, but just to be safe try doing an internet search on "browser hijacking", you should find ways to fix it. Then once you have things cleaned up, follow Pratyush's example to download paint.net safely.
  24. Thanks for an answer. But, I wanted to avoid coding because I have no idea how to code or where to get codes. If you're going to talk code, then what is a path stream? What is a path tag? How do I find out if inkscape has SVG code and then where do I get it? I was hoping for an answer that doesn't need coding, and I was hoping the answer would help me as well as others who may be interested in making shapes in inkscape and then importing them into paint.net's "custom shapes", without the knowledge of coding.
  25. Hello. Is there a way to make shapes using inkscape, avoid coding, and yet have them be compatible with paint.net and use them as custom shapes? Is there a format I need to save inkscape's shapes in? Would or could I make shapes in inkscape and then use the Shapes Maker plugin to convert the shapes or load the shapes? Thanks.
