In the sample picture you shared, the background image is outlined by the trailed text. There are several ways to get something like that, one way is with the Alpha Mask plugin. I have never tried to animate something, so I don't know the effort, but I like how some animations turn out when something is animated. I think some entries just come down to letting people vote on what they like. If you like creative works, then vote on those, and don't vote on what you don't like. I don't think creative and not creative enough is a rule, and it's already been said before that paint.net is a photo/image editing program, so when it's used that way, I don't think there should be an issue. However, some entries might not get too many votes if the entry is an image that hasn't had much done to it, or if an entry is nothing but scribble, or if an entry is just viewed as ugly by a lot of people. Paint.net can change the color of a photo, and it can draw stick people, neither ideas alone might impress too many people, but both are what PDN is capable of. At first I kind of overlooked Dips animated apple, but as I have been observing it more, I tend to like it. I don't know why, but at a closer look the way the animation has been done, it's kind of cool. I will admit though, I like the effects of the waving FIRE entry more. It has an overall better appeal to me.

Dipstick, I think you had a misunderstanding. So, just never mind it, and enjoy the competitions if you want to. If they are fun, then keep having fun. For future references, to all who enter, keeping the rules does applies to everyone. If someone does slip on a rule, it's ok to learn and live a little and then continue to participate with more experience of what to do and not do. Sometimes some bumps might happen, and if bumpy situations do happen, then if needed, once can take a break from the competitions, and come back and enjoy them again at a later time. I personally haven't been able to enter as much due to being busy. I hope to continue to see others participate though, as I like to see everyone's entries.

This is an interesting plugin, but I don't think it really does exactly what you want :http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/13595-fill-gaps-v10/ You can sort of do things manually or use other methods..... There is the clone stamp tool. Here are two old, but helpful, videos about using paint.net's Clone Stamp Tool. Video 1 Video 2 The videos might be old, but the clone stamp tool still works about the same. The main difference is the brush in the current paint.net has a soft/hardness (which is a good thing. You can make the brush's edge very soft for better blending). For older versions of paint.net, I don't know if you could get the source from another layer, but you can in the current paint.net. What I mean is, you can choose the clone stamp tool, click your source on your photo, then add a new layer, and start drawing/cloning. This feature is also mentioned in the documentation. Here is a good video, but I don't know how much it will help you, because it is actually a video for photoshop https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifhEx4adAa8. However, the concept and methods used in the video are mostly applicable in paint.net too. The video uses layers, the clone stamp tool, the color picker/eye dropper tool, and the paintbrush tool. Paint.net has those things. And where the video talks about the pen tool/path tool, you can substitute with paint.net's line/curve tool. For the areas you want to select, make a new layer and then trace/outline those areas with the line curve tool, then once you have your areas outlined, use the magic wand tool to make your selection. Once you have a selection, add a new layer to clone stamp on/paint on. Tracing/outlining is demonstrated in these background removal tutorials : Tut1, Tut2, MiniTuts. If the photoshop video confuses you more than helps you, since it is showing photoshop instead of paint.net, then never mind it. If you can't get the clone stamp tool to give you what you want, here is an alternative method : http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/19117-the-subterranean-copypaste-blues/ (if you really want to try gimp, I think the thing you want was related to something called "heal selection". try doing an internet search and you might find what you want.)

I support wanting that tool. I would like a selection brush as well. In the mean time, I can only suggest the magic wand and adjusting it's tolerance level. For a bit of a workaround, you could add a layer, then lower that layers opacity, and then use the paintbrush to paint over your subject. Once the subject that you want is painted over, you can use the magic wand tool to then get a nice selection. Or, instead of using selections, you can try the alpha mask plugin. Duplicate your image layer. Add a new layer and paint over your subject to make a mask. Select all(ctrl + a) and copy the mask to the clipboard(ctrl + c). Turn off all layers except the duplicated image layer. Run the alpha mask plugin on the duplicated image layer.

For text, I suggest : 1) Add a new layer. 2) Choose the text tool and choose your font (note: some font will have nicer edges compared to other font). 3) If needed, adjust the text tool settings as EER suggested in post #3. 4) Type your text. 5) If you have rough or jagged edges, try a blurring effect or edge smoothing plugins such as Feather or AA's assistant. I often will do a blur effect or a low feather and then duplicate the layer to re-harden the edge and yet keep things smooth, and then merge the text layers together. Or, I will Feather and then run AA's Assistant. Other ideas would be to do a small blur or feather, and then re-harden or crisp up the edges using the sharpen effect or a transparency plugin. For outlines: 1) Add a layer and type your text. 2) Smooth the edges of the text. 3) Use an outlining plugin. Boltbait has one. PyroChild has one. And Drop Shadow can be used to make outlines too. If the 3-steps way doesn't work, try this... 1) Add a layer and type your text. 2) Duplicate your text layer (you want two text layers). 3) Turn off the bottom text layer. Smooth the edges of the top text layer. 4) Turn on the lower text layer and use an outlining plugin on that text.

Have you changed your display setting at all? I know when I put my display to 125% or higher, some plugin User Interfaces become odd looking. I use windows 7, but I think other windows versions have the same feature.

Try this, make your pattern on it's own layer. Then use the gradient tool and change it to "transparency mode". You can see some examples of the gradient tool being used here : http://www.getpaint.net/doc/latest/GradientTool.html

You can also try Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast.

Hello The paint.net tool bar is always visible. You can learn more about paint.net's user interface from here : http://www.getpaint.net/doc/latest/MainWindow.html If the tool bar or any of the small windows bother you, you can toggle the small windows on and off, and you can zoom in and out as needed. There are lots of ways to zoom in and out to help make navigating the paint.net canvas easier. You can use the zoom tool (Z), or use Ctrl + Mouse Wheel, Ctrl + - and +, Ctrl + 0 (sets actual size), and in the bottom right corner drag the slider, or click the little computer icon.

You might like the Parallel Lines and Patterns plugin.

Really nice vid Pixey! Another way you can open pictures into paint.net is by dragging and dropping them. 1) From you PC, open the folder that has your picture. 2) Open/start paint.net. 3) Click your folder, and make the folder's window smaller (don't know how to resize your PC's windows? Read here.) 4) Find your picture in the folder, click, hold, and drag the picture into paint.net. You will get a prompt asking you if you want to "Open" or "Add a Layer". Choose "Open" if you simply want to open the image. Note, if you chose "Add Layer", but your image is bigger than the current canvas size, your canvas size will automatically increase. To avoid this, do not open the image by adding a new layer, instead, open it as just open, so that it opens into it's own canvas. You can re-size it while it's on it's own canvas and then copy and paste it onto the other canvas (sort of like what pixey demonstrated).

You can also try Rotate/Zoom. Go up to the Menu Bar > Layers > Rotate/Zoom. Check the "tiling" box and then lower the zoom slider.
