Crash during save, can't open anymore the pdn file

Recommended Posts

A crash of Paint.net happened when i was saving saving a file, and now i cant open it any more.
Please find attached the PdnCrash report

At this time, i was using an old version of Paint.net (3.5), so i updated it to version 4.0.5, but the problem is still the same...
However, now this message appear when i try to open :

System.IO.EndOfStreamException: Tentative de lecture au-delà de la fin du flux.
   à PaintDotNet.MemoryBlock.ReadUInt(Stream output) dans d:\src\pdn\paintdotnet\src\Core\MemoryBlock.cs:ligne 666

   à PaintDotNet.Serialization.DeferredFormatter.FinishDeserialization(Stream input) dans d:\src\pdn\paintdotnet\src\Core\Serialization\DeferredFormatter.cs:ligne 120
   à PaintDotNet.Document.FromStream(Stream stream) dans d:\src\pdn\paintdotnet\src\Data\Document.cs:ligne 1438

   à PaintDotNet.FileType.Load(Stream input) dans d:\src\pdn\paintdotnet\src\Data\FileType.cs:ligne 476
   à PaintDotNet.Functional.Func.Eval[T1,TRet](Func`2 f, T1 arg1) dans d:\src\pdn\paintdotnet\src\Base\Functional\Func.cs:ligne 158

I would appreciate very much if somebody can help me to open this file again (i spent so long time to make it...)

Thanks and hope i'll get some news  soon.

The message tells that the part of the file which contains the serialization data of the layer structure is damaged (probably because not the complete file has been written). There is little chance to recover anything because the layer bitmaps are stored after the serializtion data. Sorry.

But if you upload the file anywhere then we may have a look.

Locate the file and right-click on it.  Any option to "Restore previous version"?

Dear EgoEramReputo,

it doent seems possible to restore previous version, because there isn't any Windows restoration point...

Dear Midora,

Thanks for the informations. So there are only 12 layers remaining....  :'(

So i understand that the file is defenitely lost.... i feel sad, but no problem, it's life. I will do it again ;)  I only need 20 to 30 hours more !

In all the cases, thanks for your support and your help.

I would like to say that i really appreciate Paint.net and this problem will not change my general point of view on the software.

Thanks Midora and Ego for your quick answers.

This time save your work at regular intervals and this would save you a lot of time and frustration. It should be your number 1 rule when making anything in pdn.   ;)

Older versions of Paint.NET would corrupt the file if a crash happened while saving. Since 3.5.7 (February 2011) this is transactional, so that doesn't happen anymore.

Your file is corrupt. It can't be recovered. Please make sure to install updates! This is pretty easy if you have the auto-updater enabled in Settings; it's enabled by default but maybe you turned it off at some point.
