Is that the right link?

I've noticed this also. An open file without any unsaved changes will often be closed without warning when opening a new file or opening another pre-existing file. This results in the loss of History for that file. I haven't observed this happening if there are unsaved changes. It doesn't have to be a flattened file for this to happen.

In the Colors window click on the color that you want the text to be. In the Layers window, click on the top layer, to make it the active working layer. Next, add a new layer. Press the Esc key on your keyboard, to be sure that there is not a selection active. Activate the Text tool, and type.

Magic Wand, set to zero Tolerance. Click on the black background, press Delete.

Just for diagnostic purposes, you could uninstall NET Framework v4.0, reboot, and try Paint.NET again.

Put the text on its own transparent layer. It can be edited as image (pixels). There is an Editable Text plugin in the Simon Brown plugin pack.

The Alpha Mask effect is a way of manipulating opacity and transparency with greater control than some other methods may offer. No. I have NET 4.0, Paint.NET runs just fine.

I understand that this suggestion is not what you really want, but I'll offer it for whatever it may be worth. Probably the least cumbersome way to switch between the high working zoom and 100% zoom thumbnail, is this: Have your small work area in the middle of an oversize canvas, and keep the work region selected. You can toggle between the two views by alternating: Ctrl + Shift + A Ctrl + Shift + B
