  1. hmmm....question about the rules. Do anti-aliased edges still count as color from the original palette? If not, I think pixel art will be our best bet for this comp...

My bad...that's the one I was talking about. 1) The alias-ness really isn't as noticeable as people say, it's just the first possible improvement everyone spots. I just mentioned it because I was trying to give an alternative to feather in case you didn't fix it because you didn't like what feather did to it Not trying to OMG IT'S NOT ANTI-ALIASED!!! PIKSALD EJEZ OMG!!1!ONE 2) I figured lol. I think you did a good job copying the photoshop version. The one part you missed was the object's reflection of itself. That would take a great deal of work in pdn... 3) I'm finding displacement map quite useful, but it's pretty difficult to use because you can't just use the shadows as your map, so if you didn't save the clouds you used to make the paper, don't bother. It's still galleria worthy in my opinion ^^ 4) Engineering classes teach 3D art? Lol I'm just joking. What 3D modeling program do you use in your class? Is it free? I'd like to use a free 3D engineering program too... Anyways, looking back on all the comments, I think we are the only ones that have noticed that about the perspective, so it shouldn't be a problem XD Cool stuff! EDIT: Nice displacement map. I forgot you used a stock photo for the paper...which means point #3 does not apply here, but it may be good to note for later purposes (I'm taking note of it too...I just realized it myself )
  3. contrast-> go to Adjustments:Brightness/Contrast glow/highlights on soldier-> add new layer, use paintbrush set to a gray with a tint of color (depends on color of the picture) and paint where the glow will be, gaussian blur, Play with layer blend mode (try Additive or Glow maybe).
  4. thanks for the votes, guys! In case you are all wondering, I voted for pyro (see "no voting for self" rule ) I always wondered if it was supposed to be a cow or an ox. 牛 can mean both, so it's tough to decide I always thought ox though. According to the whole story thing, the 牛 crossed a river, and I don't think cows swim well, so I'll say it's supposed to be an ox even though some english translations of the zodiac say cow Your Chinese myth education for the day lol XD
  5. select with magic wand and hit delete for an easy way to achieve the effect you are looking for. Sarkut is correct on how you color with transparency. That way, you can adjust how transparent the color will be.
  6. It looks great! One suggestion: use a small touch of color on the clouds and on the water. Even a barely visible tint would make a large difference. A slight blue on the clouds and a touch of green in the water would do the trick. Then make the land a little more hazy. Add some clouds and decrease transparency perhaps. The colors there are too vibrant. Other than that, it looks pretty real!

like the stuff ^^ As with all galleries I post in (I think Possum's gallery is the only one I've posted in ), I have a few suggestions. 1) You'll probably rip out your hair if you hear this one more time: anti-alias. AA's assistant by dpy is pretty good for this. It leaves less of a blurry edge than feather and still removes the pixelized edge. However, it does remove the edge by...literally removing it, so don't use it on tiny pieces. 2) I'm glad you decided to try something new. I was getting a bit bored (but still amazed) at seeing repetitive 3D effects. Were you the one that wrote that tutorial? 3) about the new creation. It looks sweet XD. If you could make the text (not so much the bottom right corner. It seems you flattened out your paper there for the sweet looking stamped effect)...to much stuff in the parenthesis let me start that sentence over again lol. If you could make the text follow the paper's rumples, it would look absolutely perfect enough to go in the Galleria. Maybe distortion map? Amazing creations. keep it up! EDIT: and one more extremely perfectionistly picky comment 4) If you look very closely at your 3D images with your critical perfectionist eye set to "spotlessly realistic perspectivism," you will notice that the perspective is an immeasurably tiny bit off. The bottom seems to widen out slightly even though it is exactly the same size as the front face...which is exactly why it seems to do that. From personal experience, you should have noticed that things farther away appear smaller than they do close up. Taking this into account, the back of the 3D objects should be a tad smaller than the front (the side you see). Yes, it is an overly picky observation that nobody will ever notice except me and any other perfectionist that reads this comment, but I just thought I'd point it out.
  8. wish granted. nice entry by the way I was planning on asking you what it was, but never got around to it. what do you think of my pixel art entry? lots of pencil scribbles involved, but drawing individual blades of grass is quite tedious when done pixel by pixel...
  9. I was making an entry, but didn't have time to finish before the deadline...thought the comp was over. I'll whip something up sometime soon, hopefully ^^ EDIT: entry submitted.
  10. yea nice one. close battle O.O looks like it would have leaned towards your entry if your entry was entered at the same time, but...w/e I'm rambling. PM me with your idea for the next comp. I'm trying to think of one myself, but I'm not to creative when it comes to avatars...
  11. you could go to adjustments and mess with the brightness/contrast tool or you could go to "Effects:photo:sharpen" and plat with that or download the Sharpen+ plugin (anyone know where that link is?) and learn how to use it EDIT: also, make sure you are zoomed to actual size on the scanned document. That may be why it looks weird. I imagine it is a large picture because it is a good scanner, so it's not all going to fit on your screen when zoomed to actual size, but zooming out to make it fit will distort it in the way you mentioned
  12. O.O at my guesses 1. half right 2. correct! 3. correct! 4. correct! 5. didn't see that coming. welcome to the contests, n d! if you have been in several already, I'm a bit late, but welcome anyways! 6. I knew you joined somewhere or another lol
  13. Is this in the proper place on the forum? Anyhow... solution#1 add a new layer under your text and above your gradient, then draw your second gradient. Go to the new layer's properties and change the blend mode. solution#2 click "more" on your color window and drop the alpha of one of your colors (primary or secondary) to zero, then draw your gradient. It should fade from your visible color to whatever was there previously. PS: I like your text

nice creations, guys! @SparkRazor What size is your text when you start? It needs to be quite large when you are making it (for thin text like palace script or Vladmir script, maybe around 200-400. The bigger it is, the better the results in most cases.). When you are done, you can shrink the text down to size.
  15. hmm...just for the heck of it, I'm going to try to guess the entry creators... 1. JD 2. barbieq 3. omygosh I dunno XD 4. welshy? tie for first...how long will the poll last?
  16. my guesses as to the creators of the entries: 1. welshy/yellowman 2. Falken 3. possum 4. jerry 5. JD 6. absolutely no idea EDIT: changed my mind about #2. Hi Falken! EDIT2: changing my guess for #5 as well...jerry maybe? EDIT3: bleh. I am terrible at this. jerry might have done 4...which means JD did 5 maybe? to those that may think this means I didn't enter...I'm a bit more mischievous than you think
  17. Good point I wouldn't want it to take any more time to manage the comp either...perhaps make it not a rule, but just place it there as a reminder that this is a wallpaper competition.
  18. About the WOTW competition restrictions. I liked the whole image dimension restriction because it makes "wallpaper" in "wallpaper of the week" mean something, but it seems some people found it too strict. Maybe we should just place a minimum image size (maybe give it a minimum number of pixels or square centimeters) and tell people to just make sure there is no visible distortion of the image when it is used as their desktop background. Yes? No? Better suggestions?
  19. ha! I guessed possum and welshy's entries correctly! Gold-ish effects in JD's entries threw me off...thought that was barbieq's entry. Didn't expect oma to join O.O Had no clue who made barbieq and yellowman's entries. Nice work, everybody! I'll see if I can join the next one
  20. I won't be able to join to competition. Whether that is fortunate or unfortunate is up to you to decide . Anyhow, more entries would be nice, so I'd suggest you extend it to Monday so people have the weekend to work on their entries. Also, I like this image size restriction idea...it give "wallpaper of the week" more meaning ^^ I think we should do that to every WOTW competition from now on...please?
  21. thx yellowman. I'm eating my cookie atm...it rox ^^ And please work hard on your entry...very very hard. We need some of these to appear in the Galleria, so post something galleria worthy!
  22. lighting: draw jagged white lines with the pen tool, duplicate layer, blur both layers using gaussian blur. Amount depends on size of lines. Make the blur on the top layer less than the bottom. On the top layer, run glow (Effects-Photo-Glow) at default settings (if lighting is small, use smaller radius). Duplicate the bottom layer and reduce the brightness (adjustments, brightness and contrast) to -100, change color to blue using curves, and adjust the layer properties to your liking. Light: Find Light rays plugin and use it with one color transparent and the other as white. Erase rays as needed. Go through the same steps as with lightning and make sure curves are EXACTLY the same. Use a radial gradient to make it fade out (transparency mode). Do it separately on the different layers, making the blue layer extend a bit farther than the white ones. If it fades too quickly, duplicate the layers until it looks right. NOTE: all blue colors must be exactly the same or it won't look right.
  23. add new layer. Use pen at a large size and make a white dot in the middle of the image. use outline object plugin to give it a blue outline. Gaussian blur at around 10-20 pixels depending on the size of the dot.
  24. Oh wow...I totally expected welshy's entry to win. It was absolutely beautiful! Thanks everyone! That was a very close competition. Hopefully I'll be back soon with the new comp theme and banner. Until then, happy photo editing!
