Are you using the latest version of paint.net, which is 5.0.12 ?

You can maximize at the top of the canvas:

As far as I know, when this theme was started by @toe_head2001 the requirements were:
1. The final image to be on a 'transparent background'
2. The automatic background for the theme would be 'set' to white.
(I do alter the background color when we have very light images though)
More suggestions on this subject, please post here folks

Hello @mistyblueheart and welcome
The cursor should be set by your Windows. Did you perhaps change it on another program?
Perhaps read through this: https://forums.getpaint.net/topic/118628-cursor-size/?do=findComment&comment=586277

Me too !!!
I wonder if the folks having this trouble, are using the correct 'link'? I have posted my work and mentioned getpaint.net for many years and have not had any trouble.

and it seems that there is no [smart MagicWand] that selects only the big blocks (or regions).
You could always try the Rectangle Select tool:

Hello @jusinriker and welcome
It's just possible that the problem arises on the web site you are using.
If you could post the image you use, for us to see, and perhaps a screen shot of the website where you posted it, may be helpful.
We usually use https://imgur.com/ or https://postimages.org/ which are free hosting sites, then copy the link and post here.

You could use @BoltBait's grid lines.
1. New layer.
2. Draw the grid lines.
3. Align the lines/increase the lines size.
4. Select on Global to select all of the boxes.

Save just saves your work. If you want to save something after creating something, please choose Save As and then you will get a choice.

Hello @Pete Jones I would make all the shapes in the ShapeMaker Plugin.
There is also a great tutorial here on how to use it.

(like when Veterans, Old-timers say [Welcome to our Forum!] )
I'm sorry if this is a problem, but we genuinely try to be nice when people join our community.
We try to do our best to help folks, but there are required steps and information that we need, in order to help you, otherwise all we can do is guess.
That's why we wanted the Diagnostics information. Nine out of 10 people usually comply with this simple request. Otherwise how can we know?
