Cropping works a little differently in Paint.NET. You make a selection using the Rectangle Select tool, then choose Image -> Crop to Selection.

Do you have a selection active? Are you using it on the layer you think you are?

The freeze mask has varying effectiveness. To make it freeze "harder" you need to set the Strength higher.

On the Colors Window, click the little folder icon right above all the swatches, and then click Open Palettes Folder. Let me know if it crashes or opens the palettes folder.
