Fatal installation error after moving program

Recommended Posts

Hi, I like PDN and I have used it for a long time now. However, I ran into a twist on some other issues.

I am migrating my program files to a program drive and apparently something went wrong here. I did what appeared to be a complete uninstallation and I thought that I got all of the files. I then went to do fresh reinstalls and now I get fatal errors when installing from a fresh download file.

Maybe there are still some stray files, maybe something else. At this point it is time to ask someone who would know these things.

Thank you in advance!

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately that program also is generating an instant error and can't start.

Here is a screenshot:

Edit: I was able to open it as adminstrator, the install appeared to happen and then there is no trace of the program anywhere. This is on Windows 8.1 HP 64.

Are you sure you're downloading and installing the right package? paint.net.4.0.6.install.zip?

There's no such thing as "StartMsi.vbs" in the Paint.NET install process.

The files should be legitimate. The majority of the times when I have updated PDN the updates came from Filehippo. Also, in case something was wrong with the 4.06 I also gave 4.05 a try and got the same errors( I believe in keeping an old version or two around of setup files in my download folder in case of bad updates and similar situations.)

Also, I went in and used the program Search Everything and wiped out every last trace of the previous installs of PDN(or so it seems) to see if there was anything left jamming up the works- and that also proved unsuccessful.

However, there may be more evidence. I am getting SD Display errors when attempting to install some software from Stardock such as Windowblinds and WinFX. I don't know if these events are related though and I am racking my brains to think of anything that could be a culprit.

I don't understand why you are using filehippo. Get it from the official website if you insist on downloading it. Paint.net updates from within the program, so you don't need to download anything separately or uninstall the existing version.

When the error dialog is open, use Notepad to open the file that it's referencing (StartMsi.vbs). Copy and paste the contents here into a [ code ] block.

The StartMsi.vbs error looks to be generated by the clean up utility because scripting is disabled. See http://forums.techguy.org/all-other-software/741386-installer-cleanup-utility-msicuu2-exe.html

1. Clean out the existing installation with the Windows Installer CleanUp utility (http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/692-install-update-or-uninstall-trouble-read-this/?p=2795)

1603 usually means a system file became corrupt. So...

2. run System File Checker with the /SCANNOW option (http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/18931-fatal-installation-error-1603-fix/?p=323514)

3. Try a fresh download (from the paint.net website) and reinstall.

If you have no joy reinstalling, redo 1 and then try this http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/30437-win7-error-1603-32-bit-msi-may-not-be-installed-on-64-bit-os/#entry429646

OK, I just did a system restore and it did restore PDN- but I never got to find out if any of the solutions worked. It kinda still sticks in my craw trying to figure out just what was going on.

The other one is I have run many system file checks- and at least according to them all the system files are intact.
