Video Rewind Effect

Recommended Posts

There is a really cool effect i saw in a music video on YouTube. I looks almost exactly like when you rewind one of those old VHS tapes. I was wondering if anyone had seen this effect before or knew how to recreate it in PDN?

Here is the video:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="

name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="
type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

An alternate link:

The effect happens twice from 2:45 til 2:52. At least really close to there. Any and all help will be appreciated.

EDIT: Effect complete. Please see page 2 for more Details.

Um... Found nothing but the Jitter Plugin.

I don't know if you misspelled(or me!) something of if they are under the wrong name but I couldn't find any of these other plugins.

BTW, I got the entire Pyrochild plugin pack.

Alpha Displacement is under D in the index, and Panelling is under P.

Search should have easily found both.

First click in the Layers window on the layer named Mask.

Hold down the Ctrl key and press A, C, then D.

Next, hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys and press V.

This copies the Mask layer into a new file.

Save the new file as VHSRewindMask.png.

====================================

Go back to the original PDN file and click on the "vlcsnap..." layer that's undistorted.

Open the Alpha-Displacement effect.

Browse... to the VHSRewindMask.png file that you just saved.

Put a checkmark in "Displacement on?" and at the bottom tick "Clamped".

Set the "X" displacement to 3. Click OK.

Now hold down the Ctrl key and press F six times.

The layer should now look like the bottom layer.

======================================

Click on Layer 7, apply Gaussian blur at default settings.

Move Layer 7 up above the layer that you just applied Alpha-Displacement to and merge it down.

Open the panelling effect and adjust the "Move Vertical" to 305 or whatever you prefer.

Sorry. What I meant was: How to do this with a brand new image. Not with the file you gave me. Although this should help. Let me look at this in the morning.

If you can duplicate the result using the file that I gave you,

then you have the knowledge and experience to apply the

effect to whatever image you choose.

If you have any questions, post again, but be more specific

in terms of what your questions are.

I knew I missed something last night! A fresh look always helps. Thanks for your help! BTW, not entrirely complete.

To Finish use Paintbucket Dark Horizontal on a transparent image, The change the property to Overlay. That gives it the 'scan lines'

Thanks for all the help!
