Brae
Each time I try to start the program it will crash and an error message pops up mentioning an unhandled error. I tried uninstalling then reinstalling but the problem still remains. I even tried installing the beta version but it hasn't helped. I also apologize for not actually attaching the file but I'm not sure what the file type needs to be. Crashlog: This text file was created because Paint.NET crashed. Sarkut
Brae, Because the exception details of your crashlog specifically mention DirectWrite, you might want to try opening Paint.NET using a Desktop shortcut that has had the /disable DirectWrite parameter added to its Target path, as described in this link: /disable DirectWrite --------------------------- Reboot your PC before using the shortcut with the adjusted target path to open Paint.NET. Rick Brewster
Sarkut, /disableDirectWrite no longer does anything. I removed its functionality, in v3.5.2 if I remember correctly. Make sure you have the Platform Update installed. It should be installed already since Paint.NET is trying to load DirectWrite. However, I would check in Windows Update to be sure. Brae
Thanks for the help so far. I went into my updates and installed the Platform Update but I'm still getting the error.
Sarkut
Brae, Just wanted to check whether you rebooted the PC after the Platform Update. Also, a new stable version of Paint.NET is now available. v3.5.
Brae
Yes I rebooted after the Platform Update. I just installed v3.5.5 but the error still comes up.
Rick Brewster
In the Paint.NET installation directory, is there a file named PaintDotNet.SystemLayer.Native.x86.dll? In the Windows system directory (C:\Windows\System32) is there both a dwrite.dll and a d2d1.dll? Sarkut
Brae, Try running chkdsk, with the /f parameter, from the command line. chkdsk with /f parameter Then reboot the PC.
Brae
I tried that and rebooted but I'm still having problems. Would it have anything to do with a recent Java update? I'm looking back at system restore and on April 5 I installed Java 6 Update 19 and nothing else is listed as being installed after that. I can't think of anything else that I have downloaded. Brae
So it's been a couple months since I tried all those things and it still won't function. I have the latest version, I have ran the windows install clean up tool several times, and even PdnRepair with no results. Is there anything else I can try? pyrochild
Have you tried repairing the .NET Framework? Quote ambigram signature by Kemaru [i write plugins and stuff] If you like a post, upvote it!
Rick Brewster
.NET repair won't do anything here, most likely. That's not where the problem is. Maybe you're missing PaintDotNet.SystemLayer.Native.x86.dll. It's not in the list of loaded modules, and the failure is happening right when Paint.NET is trying to call into it. Or, you're missing some dependency of that DLL, such as the Visual C++ Runtimes. Everything's supposed to be installed automatically though by the setup wizard and/or updater. Rick Brewster
Also, it's loading with the CLR 2.0 runtime (which is fine), but ... C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\mscoreei.dll ... it's loading mscoreei.dll from .NET 4.0? Try uninstalling .NET 4. Brae
I uninstalled ".NET Framework 4 Client Profile" then restarted the computer and reinstalled Paint.NET but it didn't work. This is just really weird. I had been using Paint.NET for well over a year and never had problems. I'm not sure what I did or downloaded to cause this problem.
