Digitally Fixing Ripped Pictures?

Recommended Posts

I have pictures that someone ripped years back. I do not have the pieces that were ripped off. In most cases, I have 50-75% of the original picture intact. I am wondering if there is any way that I can scan the image in, and using Paint.NET to help me restore the missing parts with approximates of surrounding area in the picture to make it look whole again enough to reprint it.

I can upload an example if needed.

Thanks.

Hello @Unimatrix and welcome to the forum :)

We used to have a tutorial on this, but it needs to be updated, as most of the pictures are gone.  Perhaps I'll take a look at restoring it sometime.  Meanwhile, perhaps have a look at this post:

Hello. I know my profile is new today, but is because my login from 2008 seems to not want to work anymore. :) Just can not trust online databases.
I thought of the cloning tool, but since some areas are more defined, say a beach or home, I do not think I am that far in amateur skills to make it look believable.
I uploaded three examples (and these not even the worst).

Do you think the cloning tool can help with these?

Try this plugin. I was VERY impressed with the results (see second post).

How could you possibly repair the person's face when we don't have a clue what that person looks like?

I thought that too 😊 That would be expecting miracles.

Ego, I will that that plugin. Thanks.

Bolt, sorry about that. I was not expecting anyone to fix the head. I know what to do for that. That caption was for my brother who knows the people in that photograph. I uploaded it for this post mainly on the content otherwise ripped. Sorry for making you all think I was expecting "a miracle fix" for a head. Although, if someone also knew of that picture and knew the people, I be concerned.

Rle, not bad at all. I could use that photo! Thank you.
