Lookalike program

Well, the menus look almost the same, icons and floating windows. Even requires .Net to run. But after messing with Pinta, PDN seems well superior

BTW, have you actually tried Pinta, just for curiosity?

No, Paint.net is unique :)

Pinta uses some color math and effects code from Paint.NET 3.36.

I don't think Pinta is some evil Paint.NET ripoff. The Wikipedia article says it's Open Source, was first released in 2010, and was "inspired by Paint.NET." I suspect it was originally derived from Paint.NET code at a time when PDN was still Open Source.

It's not. It was basically an attempt at making a non-Windows version of Paint.NET, and it borrowed from some of the old source code that I had released. I talked with the author at some point and his goals were not nearly as ambitious (nor dedicated) as what I've had for Paint.NET. But that was a very long time ago, and maybe it has been picked up again.

Pinta...

I installed it to see what it was about, and was amazed to see there was a startling resemblance to PDN. Is there some link between the two?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinta_(software)

"Pinta is an open-source, cross-platform bitmap image drawing and editing program inspired by Paint.NET, a similar image editing program which is limited to Microsoft Windows"

and

"
Windows/Mac/Linux: If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, the coders of Pinta love the heck out of the Windows-only image editor Paint.NET. Luckily, they also want to make it available on every OS, and are faithful to its just-enough interface methodology."
