Error 1603 (During install)

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

seems I am a victim of the dreaded "1603" install failure too, though I think the causes are different. I attach the installation log, and from what I can see the symptoms are different from those described above.

My environment is:

- OS WIndows 10 TP2 x64 (fresh install yesterday), so there is absolutely no chance there is any old version of paint.net possibly on this machine

-.net FW 4.5 is surely installed, since it is part of the OS

- machine has plenty of free ram and HD storage

- install startet with admin privileges

- virus scanner disabled

There isn't anything else I can think of an end user can do to fulfill the installer's requirements.

Can you guys please look into the attached log and give me any clue what's going wrong? The first error is an error 3, which translates, usually, to "file not found". But this may be misleading, and the code is useless anyway without a file name.

(Sorry, no attachment, board software won't let me, "file of this type not allowed", "too large").

Here is a direct download link: http://www.arminlinder.de/temp/pdn.log)

Thx, Armin

Looks like the 1603 was triggered because of an installation rollback, and the rollback was triggered by SetupNgen.exe failing.

...

".NET Framework 4.6 (this will be installed automatically if not present)."

It might pay to check what version you actually have installed. Assume nothing ;)

Thanks for your efforts, guys!

I ran pdn1603diag again, and In %temp% a file "pdnSetupShim.log" was created, I guess that's the one you need. It is rather short, so here is the contents:

Just in case it matters, I did also change the pdn.log file linked above to the one created by this attempt.

Furthermore, after the failed attempt, there is a c:\program files\paint.net\staging folder left over, which contains "PaintDotNet_x64_????????.msi" files.

Just to make sure it's not a permissions issue I went through the custom install and set the target directory to a directory my user has full access to - same error.

I also made an attempt to track your installer using Sysinternal's Procmon. The trace shows an attempt to execute SetupNgen, exe from the paint.net directory, but the file can't be found. Interesting though, I found no attempt to create this file as well. Maybe this info misleads, maybe it helps, just in case it does, I uploaded the Procmon log as well:

http://www.arminlinder.de/temp/procmonlog.csv

If I can be of further help, please let me know.

Thx for your efforts,

Armin.

What you've posted is not the 'pdnSetupNgenInstall.log'. Please look for the file again, and post its contents. There's no need to run the PDN1603 tool again. Here's the exact location of the 'pdnSetupNgenInstall.log' file:

%temp%\pdnSetupNgenInstall.log

Here's an example of what it looks likes:

Hi,

checked again today. The file you mention is definitiely not created anywhere on my machine, I scanned the whole harddrive for the file name and found nothing, neither in %temp% nor elsewhere. I found an empty directory "pdnSetup" in %temp%, and the %temp%\pdnSetupShim.log file, file and directory creation dates match my last installation attempt, but not the one log file you need.

Another scan of my harddrive showed that "setupngen.exe" doesn't exist as well.

What else can I do to track this?

Thx,

Armin.

  • 3 months later...

Hi guys,

Finally the problem got - somewhat - solved. Yesterday I let Microsoft push Windows 10.0.14393 "Anniversary Update" onto the affected machine, and the problem mysteriously went away. Paint.net installed correctly right away this morning. Unfortunately, since this "solution" essentially was a complete OS reinstall, this leaves too many room for speculations about possible causes of the problem, and stabbing in the dark is of no help for others, who are struggling with installation issues, so I don't.

Nevertheless, my problem does not exist any more, and I am happy to have my favourite drawing tool back (in the meantime I fell back to Gimp, which ist kind of overkill for my needs).

Thanks for your attempts to help,

Armin.
