Can't open NEF files

This has probably been answered somewhere in here, but I haven't the time to explore all the threads. Sorry, I'm new to paint.net and digital photography. I have several pictures in RAW or NEF format that I would like to make some adjustments to but get the following error message when I try to open them:

System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception (0x80004005): The system cannot find the file specified

   at PaintDotNet.FileType.Load(Stream input) in D:\src\pdn\src\Data\FileType.cs:line 512

   at PaintDotNet.Functional.Func.Eval[T1,TRet](Func`2 f, T1 arg1) in D:\src\pdn\src\Base\Functional\Func.cs:line 158

 

I've installed the plug-in that at least allows me see the files listed, but that's as far as I can get.

What suggestions do you have?

Maybe you should install the Nikon Electronic Format (NEF) Codec so Paint.NET and other Windows apps can open the NEF images

without the need for a plugin.

Which plugin?

I would assume that it was this one by the error message:

If they want to use a plugin they may want to consider this:

(It opens a variety of RAW formats)

No, it was not. The namespace does not match.

However, several plugins match the namespace from the error message. Hence my question.

@triton49, to help us id the problem plugin, open your C:\Program Files\paint.net\FileTypes directory and tell us which of these DLL files are present.

 

• ImPNM.FileType.dll
• RAWFile.dll
• RawFileType.dll & dcraw.exe
• RAWFile.dll, RAWFileLAB.exe and dcraw64.exe
• ARWLOAD.dll

Have any of you tried installing the Nikon codec that I provided a link for above in this thread?
 

Since I have not seen a comment stating that "I installed the NEF codec and it didn't work",
I would assume that you have not done it.

I have the Nikon D3500 and it worked for me.

The original download I made was the RAWFileLAB 1.050. That's the one that let me see the NEF files list but not let me open them. I just downloaded the RAW File Type (2018-06-14) and it seems to work. Thanks for your help. It's greatly appreciated.

Thanks to everyone for their input. My problem appears to be solved.
