Explanation (NOT AN ANSWER): I am going to update in a couple weeks because Windows 10 is free, BUT, if it's not being updated, then FUDGE! I Won't be able to do any more graphics design unless I decide to buy Photoshop! Please answer.. Quote
Red ochre Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Hello RavenclawRules! As I understand Paint.NET 4+ will run on Windows 10.I hope so, as I intend to update too! Rick Brewster (the developer) talks about windows 10 here. http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/31914-discussion-your-windows-10-upgrade-plans/ Quote Red ochre Plugin pack.............. Rick Brewster Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Paint.NET already works fine on Windows 10. However, 4.0.6 should be released soon and will fix a handful of cosmetic issues. And it will have a handful of other important bug fixes, and maybe an interesting feature ... custom shape plugins 8 Quote The Paint.NET Blog: https://blog.getpaint.net/ Donations are always appreciated! https://www.getpaint.net/donate.html
rpsgc Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 Sorry for the slight necro but I just installed Paint.NET on Windows 10 and it is not the default image editor. Is that a known bug that will be fixed in one of those important bug fixes you mentioned? Quote
Rick Brewster Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 Hmm. Microsoft may have locked that down. The "open" verb has always opened a lightweight image viewer, but paint.net registers for the "edit" verb. It's launching regular Paint for me ... For now you can at least use right click -> Open with -> paint.net. Quote The Paint.NET Blog: https://blog.getpaint.net/ Donations are always appreciated! https://www.getpaint.net/donate.html

For now you can at least use right click -> Open with -> paint.net. Why do I sense that that will be a tough nut to crack? Oh well, no matter. I'll just make that change manually, in the registry. If anyone's interested, it's this key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit\command And change (default) to: "C:\Program Files\paint.net\PaintDotNet.exe" "%1" Edited August 3, 2015 by rpsgc Quote
StephanP Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 (edited) Alternative solution (save the following lines as a *.reg file): Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 REMOVED Whenever mspaint.exe is called, PaintDotNet.exe is actually executed. This trick is used by NotePad2 to replace notepad.exe and also by SysInternals ProcessExplorer to replace the standard Windows Task Manager. Edited October 17, 2015 by StephanP Quote
Rick Brewster Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 StephanP, that's a really weird way of doing that. Please do not recommend other people to edit their debugger settings. StephanP Posted October 17, 2015 Posted October 17, 2015 (edited) Hello all, In relation to "Image type not recognized" issue, I have come to the conclusion that Rick is rightfully making objections to the debugger image hijack method I mentioned above. I have removed the technical details from my posting above. The best way to have paint.net become the default program for editing images is described in the posting by rpsgc Edited October 17, 2015 by StephanP Quote
