Re editing text layer

I am finding it frustrating that I cannot go back and edit a text layer. There appears to be no way to re-edit text once you move off of the text area during it's creation. Am I missing something? Is there a great plugin to fix this deficit?

Put the text on its own transparent layer.

It can be edited as image (pixels).

There is an Editable Text plugin in the Simon Brown plugin pack.

Probably because Paint.NET is a bitmap editor and not a vector editor.

Once text is rendered it is converted to a bitmap (Paint.NET's native editing format).

For a free vector editor, I would suggest trying out InkScape.

I think supporting vector layers would nevertheless be nice -- editable text would be a huge step forward. I would also argue with that distinction between purely bitmap and purely vector editors. Photoshop supports vector layers too, though it's mainly a bitmap editor. So it must not be such a foolish thing to do.
