FernandG
Hello, I have just updated Paint.Net version 4 to version 5. No problems during the upgrade, installation. But, I can't launch Paint.Net. It asks me to update my Windows version. I am under Windows 10 22H2 in French. How do I get past this warning message, this verification ? Thank you in advance and have a nice day. Edited January 13, 2023 by FernandG

FernandG
Hi, Quote Hello @FernandG and welcome to the forum Thanks I just updated my Windows 10 22H2 from the October 2022 cumulative update build 19045.2130 to the January 2023 cumulative update build 19045.2486 and all other pending updates. Paint.NET 5 still doesn't launch and I still get the message that asks for a Windows 10 1809 / Windows 11 version or higher, which is the case (Windows 10 22H2) ?! Any other idea ? Thanks. Good day. Regards. Edited January 17, 2023 by FernandG
BDP
I'm running Windows 10 Pro, Version 22H2, OS Build 19045.2486, and have no problems running PDN 5 Brian
Pixey
It's as though your computer is not responding to the update. Weird. See what happens when you try to install from the offline installer: https://github.com/paintdotnet/release/releases Quote How I made Jennifer & Halle in Paint.net My Gallery | My Deviant Art "Rescuing one animal may not change the world, but for that animal their world is changed forever!" anon. Rick Brewster
Is there any other software you're running that's involved in launching programs that might be causing an issue? Anything that modifies File Explorer or the Start menu? There's usually something that's the culprit. How are you launching the EXE? I remember awhile ago there were some issues with opening the ZIP using WinZip and double-clicking the EXE from there, for instance. BoltBait
I wonder if it is an over zealous virus scanner software that's preventing access to Paint.NET... See what happens when you try to install from the offline installer: https://github.com/paintdotnet/release/releases I had already tried to install Paint.Net v5.0 from the offline installer. I had exactly the same problem. Error message to have a more recent version of Windows. I remember awhile ago there were some issues with opening the ZIP using WinZip and double-clicking the EXE from there, for instance. I unzip the zip file in a folder before launching the installation. After the installation, I launch Paint.Net from the shortcut of the start menu. I also tried directly from the folder "C:Program Files\paint.net" by running paintdotnet.exe. Then i uninstalled Paint.Net and installed it again. Still the same error. Today I got the version 5.0.1. Still the same error message after installing the offline installer. I test with the portable version (in download folder) and it works !? 😉 . I copied the folder of the portable version to the installation folder (robocopy /MIR) . Still the same error. So I looked at the properties of paintdotnet.exe and i realized that I have a compatibility mode on Windows 7. By deactivating it, the software launches correctly. Here is the cause of the problem. The information of the compatibility mode is stored in the registry of the user (possible also in HKLM) : HKEY_USERS\SID_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers. This information persists in the registry even after uninstalling the software and/or deleting the file/folder. Voilà, subject solved. Thank you all for your help.
