Draft of updated 3.0 Help file is available

Recommended Posts

I've uploaded a draft of the updated help file for Paint.NET v3.0:

http://www.getpaint.net/doc/3.0/

"What's New", http://www.getpaint.net/doc/3.0/en/WhatsNew.html

"Layer and Blend Modes", http://www.getpaint.net/doc/3.0/en/Laye ... Modes.html

All the new stuff has been covered, and there is a new topic titled "Layer and Blend Modes" that tries to explain layers, composition, transparency, and the blend modes.

Note that my web hosting does a few weird things with reporting character encoding, so if you see the copyright symbol as a square, or other "square" characters, don't worry about them.

Some mention should be made that Paint.NET supports plugins in case the user wants to add additional effects. A link should be added to http://getpaint.net/redirect/plugins.html
It might also be good to add a sentence or two on each effect to explain the usefulness of it or what it is trying to simulate. I personally, can't wait to hear what the difference between Gaussian Blur and Unfocus is. ;)
Oh, and if you are going to mention plugins, you might want to give some general instructions on how to install them. (I know this is not your job, but it might be very useful for your target audiance.)

http://www.getpaint.net/doc/3.0/en/FileMenu.html

Some mention should be made about file type plugins, where to get them and how to install them. I know this is in another part of the help file, but people think differenly and may not find the info on the other pages.

The web link to the forum should be using a redirect instead of a direct link to forumer. You may want to move the forum...

More later, if I find some time...

Respectfully submitted,

Your Faithful Servant... BoltBait

You should put "what's new in v3.0" at the top of the list.

Thank you very much.

Hmm the file is there just fine. For some reason I put a backslash instead of a forward slash in there though. IE7 renders everything just fine ... no red-X's here.

It may be useful to suggest in the bicycle section that the user select the sky and press Ctrl-I to invert the selection.

The link to the Bezier Curve definition doesn't work.

http://www.getpaint.net/doc/3.0/en/MainWindow.html

You state "The Paint.NET user interface is broken up in to 11 major areas:" and then you list only 10 areas.

I'm done.

I'm still working through these comments (been busy with other stuff), but I'll comment on the changes I've made so far or that I will be making (I have not uploaded a new draft yet though):

http://www.getpaint.net/doc/3.0/en/GradientTool.html

At the bottom of this page, you could use a couple of screen shots explaining how to do an alpha fade from one picture to another. You could get the info here: http://paintdotnet.12.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=2756

I've added an example explaining how to do this. It's brief but hopefully will get the job done.

I also think it might be nice to add some of the explanations from this thread: http://paintdotnet.12.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=2533

It does explain how this works already ("it fades from the alpha of the primary to the inverse of the alpha of the secondary..."). The scenario being optimized here is where the user just wants to draw a transparency gradient and doesn't even think about adjusting the alpha. They are able to click on gradient, then transparency, then draw.

Oh, and it might be nice to show the conical gradient shown in a circle selection (instead of square).

Not doing this.

Some mention should be made that Paint.NET supports plugins in case the user wants to add additional effects. A link should be added to http://getpaint.net/redirect/plugins.html

I've already added a Help->Plugins menu item. But maybe I'll do this too.

It might also be good to add a sentence or two on each effect to explain the usefulness of it or what it is trying to simulate. I personally, can't wait to hear what the difference between Gaussian Blur and Unfocus is.

I just don't have the time/energy to do this for the 3.0 release.

Oh, and if you are going to mention plugins, you might want to give some general instructions on how to install them. (I know this is not your job, but it might be very useful for your target audiance.)

Oh gosh, that's just begging people to e-mail me for clarification on the instructions :( So no I will definitely not be doing this. I'd rather have some kind of "Manage / Install Effects..." menu command in a later version.

The web link to the forum should be using a redirect instead of a direct link to forumer. You may want to move the forum...

Yeah I was thinking of this too but skipped over it out of laziness. I've changed it though now.

http://www.getpaint.net/doc/3.0/en/ColorsWindow.html

This page should mention left and right click on the color wells to select colors.

Will do.

You may also want to explain the format of the palette files. You can get some text about them here: http://paintdotnet.12.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=2600

The files already explain their format when you open them via the comments at the top.

http://www.getpaint.net/doc/3.0/en/index.html

You should put "what's new in v3.0" at the top of the list.

Good point. I've rearranged the list.

Not sure why you're thanking me, but ... you're welcome? :)

(pointed out typo in FAQ)

Ack, good catch! Will fix.

It would be helpful if the web based version of the help file had tags for easy linking.

Good ask. Will do.

http://www.getpaint.net/doc/3.0/en/LineCurve.html

The link to the Bezier Curve definition doesn't work.

Dang text encoding. I think I need to substitute in some %XY code or something. Works fine when the html files are local.

http://www.getpaint.net/doc/3.0/en/MainWindow.html

You state "The Paint.NET user interface is broken up in to 11 major areas:" and then you list only 10 areas.

Heh, woops. I did have 11 areas then consolidated two and didn't set it back. Will fix :)
