Black lines appear at the side of some pictures

Recommended Posts

I have updated paint.net in December and since then black lines of various sizes and thickness show up on the vertical or horizontal side of some of the pictures once they have been formatted with paint.net. How can this problem be addressed please?

Hello @Vince1960 and welcome to the forum :)

Can you tell us a bit more please.

I assume you are using version 5.0.12 and have checked all of your Windows updates?

Also, which system are you using Windows 10, 11 ?

You could also give us your Diagnostics:

Please explain exactly what you mean by "once they have been formatted with paint.net".  i.e. What is your workflow here?

For example, explain what you are doing like this:
1. I open a .jpg photo with paint.net

2. I do X, Y, Z to the image.

3. I save the image

4. Next time I open it I see black lines at the edge

Could you also take a screenshot and paste that in your reply so that we can understand what you are seeing.

  • Tactilis changed the title to Black lines appear at the side of some pictures

What you have sounds good.

Can you post - nothing lurid please :) - an example of the finished product for us to see.  You can post free here,  https://postimages.org/  and then post the direct link on here.

The process you described is exactly what I did:

1. I open a .jpg photo with paint.net

2. I do X, Y, Z to the image.

3. I save the image

4. Next time I open it I see black lines at the edge

Oddly enough, only some pictures come out with these black lines

You haven't said what you do at step 2.

You haven't said what operations you are doing to the image.

I have a good example at hand but my firewall does not allow me to use https://postimages.org/

Is there any other way I can show you the picture?

Then let your Firewall allow it.  We all use it and Imgur too.

Also, before you flatten your images to Save As, are you cropping the pictures to the flattened canvas size?  You may have some edges showing from an uploaded image.

No, I am not cropping to the flattened canvas size.

I don't control my Firewall as I don't have administrator rights, sorry.

What is mysterious is that sometimes these black lines are thick, sometimes thin, and sometimes on the horizontal side, sometimes on the vertical side and sometimes on both a horizontal and a vertical side. The work on the picture does not differ between the pictures that are unaffected and those that suffer from this problem.

We are running out of ways to help unless you can share the images.

Ideally, I'd want to see:
1. The original .jpg file (i.e. before editing)

2. A screenshot of paint.net showing the edited image before saving

3. The saved .jpg file

4. A screenshot of paint.net with the saved file opened and showing the black bars

You can zip these and upload them to any file sharing platform (Google Drive, MS OneDrive, Dropbox, Mega, etc) and provide a shareable link.

Can you also confirm that the only thing you are doing is to open a .jpg, adjust the levels, rectangle select an area, crop to selection, and then save as a .jpg ?

Yes, we need the diagnostics information which has been requested from you multiple times in this thread. If you won’t provide it then we will have to lock this thread.

An example of the problem is visible on the right hand side of this Christmas picture:

The link you provided gives:

"This item might not exist or is no longer available.
This item might have been deleted, expired, or you might not
have permission to view it. Contact the owner of this item for
more information."

You need to provide a link that is shareable to all.

And you haven't provided the Diagnostics as has been requested multiple times. Just copy it and paste it in your reply.

You are wasting the time of people who are trying to help you.

@Vince1960 you can do this:

1.  Bring your example, if it is large, into paint.net, and resize it to a reasonable size, no bigger that 600 x 800.

2. Save it to your desktop in .png or .jpeg.

3. Upload the example right into this thread via "choose files" at the bottom of this window.

4.  I will give you an example with this apple.

Sorry Pixey, I can't spot any choose files anywhere on the page.

I was trying to help by pointing a bug as much as I was seeking help. I am not a digital wizard and would not know where to find diagnostics, sorry Tactilis.

Pixey showed you how and where in her first reply.

Unfortunately this thread is going in circles and there’s no exit in sight, so I’m closing it.

It’s clear this isn’t a bug in PDN, as no one else is experiencing it. That’s why we needed the diagnostics info, so we can figure out what’s different about your system, if anything
