  1. I came up wi th an interesting background. Might make for a good sig. Easy enough to duplicate. What do you think? Btw. Bob Rules!!
  2. I'm realy starting to like drakaan's glass marble tutorial. I did notice something. PNG's are supposed to support multiple levels of transparancy. But when I tried to merge the face down on the shadow layer (set at 163% alpha) the face became transparent. I tried to fill the shadow area with the grey set to 163% transparancy and no luck. I'm gonna try again, with another simple image using alpha mask to see if that will do the trick. nvm.. i figgured out why filling with the grey set to 163% alpha didn't work. Trying to fill over the solid grey already there doesn't work. Gotta erase what's already there and fill transparent area. That worked. The alpha mask should still work though, havn't tested it yet.
  3. ok.. sorry.. did a search for hexagon and it didn't come up.. did another search or hexagonal and it did. (maybe i typo'd something the first try. had to be..) Thanks.
  4. without wanting to make you list every single type.. there is a plugin for pcx. This I found usefull because there is a program that I use that is skinnable and uses pcx files for skinning. I'll have to look, but as far as i know, lossless or lossy depending on the color pallet used (or depth thereof) no alpha support. available here: http://paintdotnet.12.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=2493 Also.. used to be that IE didn't support transparancy in PNG's.. does it now?
  5. Yea, i realize that the stickies are the real good tutorials.. but I was trying to not be subjective by my term of 'good'.. Basically, what I meant was anything that followed the rules, and was either a new effect, or a new way to do an old effect.. not just another duplication of an old effect with all the same steps. (this list would also help people figgure out if a tutorial has already been posted, if they can't find the search button. redundancy i know..) As for the stickies. if they sticked every tutorial that followed the guidelines i just listed, the first three pages would be solid stickies.. Thus why doing it in a sticked thread is better. List of all the tutorials that didn't make the sticky list. And I would be happy to start a thread on the subject, but I figgured something like that would probably take a mod to "ok" it first. I didn't want to hash up any old wounds.
  6. quick suggestion.. I didn't glance all of these pages in this post so forgive me if it's already been suggested.. How about a hexagonal (the six sided) grid?
  7. Recently, I found a tutorial on the first page (I seldom browse beyond the first page, never past the second) for grass which I liked. Someone of course revived an old thread which was against the rules, however in this case I'm glad that they did, as I'd have never thought to even look for this tutorial, but was sure glad I found it. So, as a way of keeping the much needed rule against reviving dead threads, but at the same time making it easier to browse the many good tutorials that have been lost to the ravages of time, How about making a sticky that has links to all tutorials that are usefull, and fall into the guidelines of being a good tutorial (follows the rules, is a new effect or a new way to achieve an old effect, etc..) but just didn't make it to the stickied hall of fame. This would give me something to browse, finding new tecniques that I would normally never have thought to search for originally. All at the cost of just one more sticky, and moderators having to update it every so often to add new tutorials, and remove ones that are oudated via plugins or newer tutorials. One can even try to categorize the list by some means if they wanted to.
  8. I like this new sig.. can anyone make it better though?
  9. I noticed something interesting the other day, and confirmed it more today. When working with multiple layers that each have different blend modes, or transparancies etc, It's best to merge the bottom two layers first, then the new bottom two, then the new bottom two, ect.. Doing the top two layers, appears to change the blend mode or transparancy of one of the layers.. and can ruin the effect. I havn't tested to find out.. does 'Flatten Image' (something that isn't always an option, such as when you are merging all but one layer that you want to keep aside..) merge from the bottom up? or does it work from the top down? Also, good thing to remember.. before merging layers, I am trying to get into the habbit of saving the file by version number.. so that later on, if i decide i need to change one of the layers, i don't have to re-create from scratch.
  10. personally i hate blinking text, or images.. but that's your choice. How about someone get into the phpbb code and rename 'Search' to 'Google' ??
  11. no.. All Rick had to do was program it. Seriously, that image i posted earlier, wasn't just to show off, i was hoping for feedback. any way I can improve it? Located at http://img262.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sigcd6.png
  12. ok.. found a couple pretty nifty tutorials.. came up with this for a sig.. it still needs to be resized down a bit.. What do you think? any room for improvement? any suggestions? Can you even make out the letters?
  13. heh.. nice title.. took me a second to recognize it.. Although, just so that it's clear.. i'm not whining.. just asking.. And i'll try to make sure future topics are even clearer on their titles. I am an adult.. and while sometimes i disagree with other people.. that is my right.. I do tend to voice my opinions in an adult manner though. I don't call names, or flame. In fact, as with all my posts, I'll generally write up what I want to say, let it sit for a few minutes, and re-read it to see if I could re-word it better. I don't always agree with mods, but I do appreciate and support them. I don't always agree with police officers, but when one has a .38 special pointed in my direction, my hands will not be fidgeting around in my pockets. I do realize that the mods have final say on here (short of the forum owner himself) and I will always respect that.
  14. The problem with having authors title their tutorials with how difficult they think the tutorial is, is that something that the author thinks is easy another person may think is difficult. I think difficulty should be something that is rated by the multitudes and that after enough votes it would average itself out to be truthful in how difficult it really is. Just a thought. Another thought. Anyone consider doing a Paint Dot Net Wiki? Something to go along with the forums (not replace them).
  15. oh, i've read them.. three or four times.. i guess it's just a matter of how one percieves posts.. and the other post i can see what you mean.. mine, however, was an honest question.. i had blocks forming the outline of the name and was asking how to make them 3D.. i guess i'll figgure out how to do t hat on my own.. Thanks for the clarification.. oh.. and please, don't get me wrong.. i've moderated forums before, and fully understand the reason for rules, and having to make strict decisions.. i've also seen some boards that didn't have them, and how unorganized they could get. So I fully support the mods here, even if sometimes I may not always agree with them.
  16. I posted a topic last night, asking for help.. it's vanished completely. Doesn't even show up under search by author.. I noticed another thread in the Questions forum, where someone asked for help, and there was a reply to post finished pics in the pictorium and then it was locked. I thought the pictorium was for finished pics, not for help requests or questions.. Is there something I'm missing?
  17. I realize that I could ctrl-c and ctrl-v easily, but it's just not as quick as ctrl-drag.. and to name one thing that MS Paint does that Paint.Net doesn't.. i already did. shift-drag... try it in MS Paint.. it's pretty kewl effect.
  18. Hrm.. tested it.. It does do this.. sorta.. One, it only works the first time.. you have to unselect and re-select to do it again.. Second, even on a transparent layer, where I drew a small circle using the brush, with no background below it, it treated the transparent color as a opaque color, and covered or erased what it covered.. It's got bugs.. and I also tried the Shift trick.. not implemented..
  19. I'll agree that Net is very easy to use and very powerful, however there are some things I am used to in Paint that as far as I can tell are not in .Net. For one.. I am quite used to, in MS Paint, Selecting a region of the image, holding the ctrl key down and draging the selected region to one side, leaving a copy of itself behind. This is a very easy way to copy portions of the image. In .Net.. I'll have to duplicate the layer. For another, although I havn't used this much even in MSPaint, I did find it rather neat, you can select a region of the image as before, but instead of holding the ctrl key down, hold the shift key. It turns the region you have selected, including it's colors into a custom brush with which you can paint the entire window or any portion there-of with. This is best done using the main background color set as secondary color, and the selection set to transparent. Now, I still love Paint.Net.. but there are some things where MS Paint still owns.. at least for simple images.. @hellslave: I am unsure which windows you are using (probably XP. but possibly Vista).. in XP you can go to the Tools menu and select Folder options. Under that, click the File Types tab, look for the file type in question and set which program you want to use to open it from then on. Be sure to check for all types of that file extention.. e.g. Mine has BITMAP set to Gimp, and BMP set to Paint. so when i select Open it goes to Gimp, and Edit goes to Paint. I'll have to change Open to Paint and Edit to Paint.Net i guess.
  20. Thanks for all of the welcomes. I got that pcx plugin, thanks. Currently.. is there any way to use some of the effects such as clouds etc, and have it stick to only using colors from a set pallet? Speaking of pallets, I notice that i can set colors and save a pallet in Paint dot net, but it's limited to 16 x 6, or 96 colors. Is there a way to have it present and give me options to these colors (235 colors total) I really need to stick to that pallet, although the game itself will be introducing 24bit art in the future. Nvm.. I just found out that the pcx plugin supports saving using original pallet. This is good.
  21. Hi all. I've been enjoying Paint Net for a few days now.. I've followed several of the tutorials. It's amazing how powerfull yet simple Paint Net is.. especially since I have been using Gimp for so long. It's not exactly what I need though.. even it's features are more than what I wanted. Mind you, I will most certainly use Paint dot Net when doing anything for forums, or web pages.. but I was really hoping for a MS Paint clone with layers. The reason for that, is what I was wanting ot use it for, is a game that allows me to make my own objects, floors, and walls with art. It has a strict pallet to stick to (256 colors), and a strict iso view. For working on these, I'll probably only use the pencil and eyedropper.. but the Layers really help when drawing something to fit that iso view. However, I do have one request. I know it's a format that isn't used often, but could someone please write a plugin that will allow Paint Dot Net to open, and save PCX files? Thanks. Oh.. and for an example of what I'm working on.. three avatars I made Some floor tiles for same game
