We try to refrain from "task specific" tools or shortcuts in Paint.NET. Maybe in the future we'll have some convenient way to set up a macro to make this easier, but for now the best way to do this is with the paintbrush.

1. We won't be implementing this. Paint has it, but we believe it's a very poor and inaccurate way to resize the image. Not to mention it would not fit in to our user interface motif and architecture. 2. We're planning on this for v2.2. 3. You can. 4. As long as the image is copied to the clipboard as a bitmap, we can grab it. I just tried copying an image out of Powerpoint and it worked just fine.

FYI, selection union and subtraction has been implemented and will be present in the first alpha release of Paint.NET v2.2. We are still working on scaling and rotation, but hey ... one step at a time. * Left mouse button replaces the current selection. * Ctrl+left mouse button performs union (currently it does "XOR", aka original + new - (intersection of original and new) ) * Right mouse button does subtraction * Ctrl+right mouse button does "XOR" The performance is currently troublesome but we're working on it of course. So to do what you describe above, you'd draw the original selection using the left mouse button, then 'cut out' the areas you don't want using the right mouse button.

Sorry, you have to have administrator privileges to install Paint.NET. You can, however, install it on one computer (say, your home computer) and then copy the contents of the installation directory to another computer (your work computer). It will work, assuming you have .NET installed, but you will lose functionality. You will not be able to print, scan, or acquire from a camera, nor will the shell integration be present (file type associations, and thumbnails for .PDN files).

From a file? Layers -> Import from Files

You can select any area you want with a selection tool, especially the magic wand, and use Edit->Clear Selection (or just 'delete').

Probably a better idea to just use the eraser tool to erase what you don't want to be in the picture. Make use of the generous undo facilities to step back as necessary. Then create a new layer, place it below (well, "on top" in the list, ours is kind of backwards) the picture, and fill it with whatever color you want.

Good idea ... I looked around the admin stuff and couldn't find a way to do this though.

A menu command to clear this list has been implemented for the upcoming v2.2 release.

I think I tasked Tom with doing this. I'll have to nag him about it next time I see him though.

We won't be adding this. It adds too much clutter and complexity to the user interface. If we added some 'common' sizes, we would get requests to change what the values are to whatever the person thought was 'common,' which means we'd probably have to have some UI to specify what the 'common' values are ... Plus, it's not hard to type 1024 [tab] 768 or 800 [tab] 600.

When you go through the printing wizard, it does have some preview facilities.
