is here a way to increase the brush size used when using the shapes effect. or a work around.?

Are you talking about polygones or spiro-shapes ?

If so then not directly. You could use the outline effect (Thickness = your choise, Intensity=100). You have to have the shape on a transparent background, and you'll have to delete the white after outlining.

For other built-in shapes (circle, rectangle, etc...) the pen size is used...
