Why does every effect have these three obligatory dots? (Smudge... | Dents...)

Was that a spontaneous design decision back in the early days or is this just the way you do it in the graphic business?

It's standard Windows UI guidelines. I don't know why you're assuming it was a "spontaneous design decision" from "back in the early days". You're weird man. Stop posting when you're drunk.

This is a standard Windows User Interface Guideline specification.

The "..." is for any menu command that requires additional user input to complete. Originally I thought it was for any menu item that would result in a modal dialog, but I was wrong.

Hence why (IIRC) older versions of Paint.NET have a "..." for Help->About but more recent ones do not.

i use window vista, can i use the new version of paint.net without servicepack1?

Vista SP1 is a free download. Just go install it via Windows Update. There's really no excuse since it's been out for a few years, and ever superseded by SP2 now.

Upgrade is not supported with MSI AD/GPO. You must first uninstall.

Hi Rick

We use Paint.Net for our student laptops. While distributing 3.5.5 we got the 1721 error:

Product: Paint.NET v3.5.5 -- Error 1721. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action: _577D73A5_8502_4A32_A3DC_26C3DEF80357, location: C:\Program Files\Paint.NET\SetupNgen.exe, command: /install DESKTOPSHORTCUT=1 PDNUPDATING=0 SKIPCLEANUP=0 "PROGRAMSGROUP=" QUEUENGEN=0

You note here that upgrading is not possible. Does this mean it will not be possible anymore for future versions when using the MSI installer ? This would really be a headache. Is there a list of MSI guid's of all Paint.Net version so that I can make an uninstall script?

Previous msi upgrades went fine so I was surprised that this doesn't work anymore.

What I meant is that using the built-in updater is not supported after you've used the MSI. You must either install with the UI wizard, or the MSI, and can't use the other without uninstalling.

You got the 1721 error on all systems or only a few? 1721 is a pretty generic error. Try looking at the log files in %TEMP%, such as PdnMsiInstall.log and PdnSetupNgenInstall.log.
