Paint.NET v2.64 is now available

Recommended Posts

As usual, get it via the build-in updater (File->Updates->Check Now), or on the website ( http://www.eecs.wsu.edu/paint.net/ ).

This small updates fixes a few minor bugs, and improves Windows Vista compatibility. As a bonus, it also adds much better GIF save quality.

* Improved GIF save quality by implementing Floyd-Steinburg error diffusion algorithm

* Printing now works in Windows Vista

* Fixed a startup performance problem on some systems that was an artifact of the way the .NET Framework was verifying Authenticode signatures as part of its assembly loading process

* Executable files now have UAC manifests to ensure proper execution privilege and to disable file and registry virtualization in Windows Vista

So far there's MDI (albeit without some of the loose ends like managing instances of PaintDotNet.exe, and fit+finish), rewritten toolform snapping (they snap to each other, to the edges, and they remember their positions), and I'm almost done with the rewritten updater logic/UI. The last one had to be done because of a major non-feature: huge enormous refactoring and reorganization of major portions of the code base. I've spent a lot of time just making things more logical for what needs to be done going forward, instead of shoehorning all sorts of new features into a codebase that was not really designed to accomodate them. And 115,000 lines of code is a lot for one developer (me) to be maintaining.

Progress has been very slow because I've had major time commitments elsewhere. Tom has not actually had the opportunity to contribute anything to v3.0 yet, but we'll see what he can manage. He always tends to make quantitatively small, yet qualitatively large, contributions (Curves, anyone?).

I'll probably have to axe a ton of planned features just so that 3.0 can actually get released, then trickle the rest of the features out over 3.1, 3.2, etc.

Okay, so you are rewriting a good chunk of the 115,000 lines of code? Not too hard...

I was looking for that in the toolboxes. And MDI is a big jump, so I can see why that is the only feature other than toolbox snapping done currently. What big changes are left?

O.k. then, I thought I'd "feel" it out anyway, I recently found out that .NET framework v3.0 is in beta and I was taken aback because v2.0 was released.

-Microsoft is quick with those .NET framework releases!- :!:

Born2killx, I can't tell if you're being angsty or just clueless, so I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt. Calm down and stop making posts like you think you're a moderator (there are other posts throughout the forum, not just this previous one). Thank you.

S0S, as for your question: I'm not sure yet because I haven't evaluated .NET 3.0 yet. I'm still working with the stable and released .NET 2.0. I'd love to make Paint.NET a first-class, gorgeous Vista app though. It's just a matter of time and timing.

I definitely want to get a gradient tool in there, I think Paint.NET is really hurting right now by not having it. Layer masks and adjustment layers are also up there on my short list, but will require a lot of work. I really want these last two things, though, as the required infrastructure changes also open up a lot of other possibilities.

I already saw one word in Rick's post, and I thought: I have to reply.

MDI, MDI, MDI!!

Yipieee!

Is iot there in PdN v2.64?

When does PdN v3.0 appear?

And btw: PdN is my main, best and only picture editing program (without MS Paint :P). :D

EDIT:

Sorry, I just saw the first page of this thread.

At the moment, the website (http://www.eecs.wsu.edu/paint.net) "cannot be displayed" :(

If it would be, I would have PdN v2.64 already.
