Sounds like you have an existing paint.net installation that has become broken. Please use this utility to remove the broken installation:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17588/fix-problems-that-block-programs-from-being-installed-or-removed

Afterwards, you should be able to install paint.net anew.

If you are getting that error on the install then I might try clearing the windows Temp folder. Then start the install as an Admin. Right click, Run as Administrator....

You can also try downloading the latest version in case your installer has an issue or came from another source. https://github.com/paintdotnet/release/releases/download/v5.0.6/paint.net.5.0.6.install.anycpu.web.zip

SetupDownloader
The program failed to start correctly (0xc000007b). Click OK to close the program.

From what I understand, this type of error means that something with your .NET Framework installation, or its dependencies (like the Visual C++ Runtime, I think?) has become broken or corrupted. If you removed .NET, or anything related, you should un-remove it. You might also try going to "Add or remove programs" in Settings (use Start to search for it) and see if you can find a "repair" button.

@Varloss_Tva The above advice from @Pixey about an existing paint.net installation does not apply to your situation because from what you wrote in a PM to me, it appears that you don't have an existing paint.net installation on your work PC:

Hello,

im veteran (11years using the application) but i never haved an account so here i am, at work i would like to install it, but just when i executed shows me this; "The aplication couldn't start correctly (0xc000007b)" i dont know if there's some aplication like Visual C++ i saw or DirectX but i see the instalation doesnt work, idk if you could help me, thanks!

My reply was to direct you to @Rick Brewster's comment above regarding some other broken dependency on your PC.

I have the same issue on a new Windows 11 where Paint.net has never been installed.

A workarround is to not use the generic installer but click "Offline installers" and download the x64 version. That worked for me.

My guess is that something that used to be part of the OS is not there any more after an update and the light weight web installer is still dependant on this. So either the light weight web installer should be updated to include this dependency or it should be changed to use some other library that is native to Windows 11.

See my earlier reply in this thread here. Seems to happen if certain Windows components/features are uninstalled.

I have struggled with this error since my work laptop was replaced. With IT dept help we did all the C++ steps ran fixes etc etc.

The fix is use the offline download!!! I didn't even know that option existed until Hans' post. I am so thrilled this AM. Thank you thank you thankyou

Like I said above, your IT department probably removed .NET Framework 4.8.
