No, don't give up. First, use the magic wand tool to select outside the people, and then press delete. A checkerboard should come up. Then flatten the image and save as a png, and then you're done.

Thanks everyone. Here's an update. I've been trying nebula, (or whatever the plural form of nebula is) for awhile now. I can't seem to nail it down because all the tutorials need renders/photoshop. This is 100% PDN, but isn't very nebula-like.
