Paint.net installation suddenly freezes

Recommended Posts

my paint.net kept crashing when i opened it lately, so i uninstalled it in hopes that reinstalling would fix it. now whenever i try to open the installer it freezes at the "extracting files" part of the installation then closes itself. i have .net framework installed, ive updated my pc, im using windows 10, i have enough space in my pc to install it, so why does it keep freezing at extracting files? id appreciate help, thanks

Hello @pigmaskcolonel and welcome to the forum :)

Sometimes, when you remove the program, it leaves behind 'bits' that mess with a new installation.  Most people find this tool useful, to clean up your last installation, and then when you have run it, please try to re-install:

thanks for the response, but when i run the troubleshooter, paint.net isnt listed in the list of programs. when i select "program isnt listed" it just closes the troubleshooter.

this is probably a bit too late to mention, but i checked my program files n stuff to see if there was anything leftover, and it turns out there was, none of paint.net was actually uninstalled and the program files were still there, despite the fact i used the windows troubleshooter on paint.net before uninstalling originally. i used revo uninstaller to get rid of the leftover folders and registration keys on my pc but it still gets stuck at the extraction phase when i try to install it. i hope this info helps a little, albeit its a bit late

I would try to use the troubleshooter a couple of more times.  I know this happened once to another member, and it finally worked eventually.

It also might be worth trying this:  https://devblogs.microsoft.com/dotnet/net-framework-repair-tool/

i have tried doing both of these. ive ran the troubleshooter atleast 20 times now and ive ran the framework repair tool about 15 times. still nothing.

If it's stuck at "Extracting" then the problem has to do with copying files to your %TEMP% directory.

At what part does it get stuck? At the beginning? (in other words, no progress at all) Or somewhere in the middle?

Either way, I advise making sure you have enough disk space (for safety sake let's round up and say at least 1GB on C ), and running chkdsk. The latter can be done at the command line, e.g. chkdsk c:, or by right clicking on your hard drive in This PC, then Properties, then the Tools tab, then click on "Check".

Also, if you have crash logs from when the app was crashing, those would be very useful.

They should be in %LOCALAPPDATA%\paint.net\Crash Logs. On my system, that's C:\Users\Rick\AppData\Local\paint.net\Crash Logs

Please post the most recent one here if you've got one.
