aatwo
The Emboss effect is in almost every photo editing program in the whole wide world.... My question is why? It looks rubbish and I've never seen anyone use it before... Quote Deviant Art Gallery
Illnab1024
I use it well, mainly in patterns where I get rid of the grey color, but It is useful for unsaturated relief. Quote ~~
Born2killx
I agree with you but I wanted to vote for purple monkey dishwasher for some reason. Quote I built my first computer at age 11!

RejZoR
Well it might be useless to you, but you can make pretty nice results with it. 15 seconds of work including emboss effect Emboss is also cool for creating Normal texture maps or bummapping maps. Emboss is meant fot bump, 3D and relief effects.
aatwo
interesting. I am now neutrally positioned towards the emboss effect. I neither hate its fat ugly guts, or love its soft cuddly guts. Quote Deviant Art Gallery

RejZoR
Main problem is that it's pretty much useless on colored pictures, thats why not many actually use it. If you need to apply same effect on colored images you have to use Relief tool. But for black and white tone maps it's excellent.
Rick Brewster
From what I understand Emboss can be useful when working with textures for 3D games or something, for creating bump/normal maps.
