How do I get rid of the checkered patten on the canvas which shows up when I reduce the opacity of a layer? The pattern interferes with and obscures the photo composition.

To add on: Seeing the checkerboard pattern means that there are no opaque pixels above that section of the image.  After you've finished edits, make sure you hide the new white layer or your image will not have any transparency when saved.

And nothing could stop it, or hold it, or reason with it. One day it would just drop out of the sky and tear down your world.
Amy: But how did it end up in there?
The Doctor: You know fairy tales. A good wizard tricked it.
River Song: I hate good wizards in fairy tales; they always turn out to be him.
