paint.net Installer Hangs

Good morning,

I had a full working copy of paint.net installed on Windows 7, and worked fine when I upgraded to Windows 10. However, I did a clean reinstall of Windows 10 and now cannot get any version of paint.net to finish installation. The installer always hangs at the percentage shown in the photo linked. Has anybody else ran into this issue? Any help is appreciated.

How long are you letting it sit before determining that it's hung? Look in Task Manager ... is there still a bunch of CPU usage, especially by something called mscorsvw.exe? (in the Details tab) If so, it's just taking awhile. An OS upgrade will invalidate the NGEN cache which will then stall a paint.net update if you install it soon afterward. You just have to give it a few minutes. It's basically recompiling all of .NET.

On Sunday I let it run for 4 hours with no progress. I left it running while I'm at work. I'll check it when I get home and look at those things you listed.

If it's mscorsvw.exe taking up CPU time in Task Manager, just try killing it. Might take a few stabs (it gets launched multiple times).

Almost 11 hours later and still in the same spot.  mscorsvw.exe isn't running at all in the task manager.  Any other ideas?

Kill "SetupFrontEnd.exe" (in Task Manager) and restart Windows. The setup wizard doesn't do anything critical after that point (once it starts "optimizing").

That worked.  Everything installed to the Program Files directory and the application runs fine.  Only thing missing are Start menu shortcuts, and I can add those manually.  Thanks for your help!

Well, I thought everything was okay, then I went to install something else and it rolled back paint.net thinking the installer was hung.  I tried installing via a created MSI, with logging enabled.  The installer stills hangs, and I have pasted the last few lines of the log up to the point it hangs.  At this point, I'm at a brick wall and may just have to start from scratch. Again.

Have you tried to install it from D:\ or other partition than C:\?
